The umpire robbed them from a point; thanks Gill for the perfect commentary ❤

01:10:36 The part you want is here, but before you jump on the bandwagon, here is an honest assessment of the situation and why the umpire was justified in her decision. This was not a easy call to make, despite the commentator's (Gill Clark) colourful reaction, even if you've read the laws of badminton. Here's what happened: The server (Malaysian) failed to serve to the receiver (Danish). In fact, his serve was so wildly off-target that it went outside the receiver's service court and the shuttle hit the Danish player not receiving the serve. Naturally, Carsten Morgensen was not expecting to have a shuttle flying his way, so didn't dive out of the way. The umpire could not see Carsten Morgensen catch the shuttle (because Mathias Boe was blocking her view) and thought it had hit the floor and then been quickly picked up. So, she justifiably called a let. So, what badminton law should she invoke if she could have reviewed the video footage (this seems to be true historically in 2009 as of today): - 11.1.4 The player of the receiving side standing in the diagonally opposite service court to the server shall be the receiver? Which would not give the Malaysians a point as he appeared to be serving to the non-receiving player. - 13.2.3 It shall be a ‘fault’ if, in service, the shuttle is hit by the receiver’s partner? In this case, did the Dane "hit" the shuttle? I think it is more fair to say that the shuttle hit him. - 14.2.7 It shall be a ‘let”, if any unforeseen or accidental situation has occurred. In which case, the umpire was correct. What actually should have happened given that the umpire was not allowed to review the video footage: 1. Gill should not have been so vocally partisan unless she was able to provide the specific law/s that proved her point. 2. If, indeed, the referee was rightly summoned then he should have done his job and the outcome should have reflected whatever is written in the rules, or in this ambiguous case, been best judged by the referee. Ultimately, the laws seem ambiguous on this situation and playing a let seems perfectly reasonable even if reviewing the footage back was possible. Why? Because if it is permissible for a server to target the non-receiving player like a game of dodgeball to win a point, then this is clearly a bad rule and should not be encouraged as a strategy to win. This is badminton, not dodgeball.

How much money did they give to the umpire and tournament refree? The Danish team could have shown some sportsmanship, but they didn't. In the end, the Danish team, the line judge, the umpire and the tournament refree lost the championship match!
