Amen....I evented in the late 60s...had 3 surgeries/back/subsequently due to bad falls at dangerous fences...and 12" deep silt at water jumps after a heavy rain...WTF...officials did'n think to check the river bed??? And none of the fences were "break away" back then....No Armor vests...I think the course designers are getting arrogant!

It’s always a pleasure to see riders having respect for their horses and taking their care and safety into mind. (0:05 I want to add I don’t mean that ALL these riders don’t care for their horses. I just think that some riders (in any practice) get too caught up in the moment. I additionally want to mention that I not against the use of crop or spurs, as long are they are used correctly. But enough is enough when the rider is excessively pulling, whipping, or kicking. *edited to add timestamps*

To be fair, those inflatable vests as re made to immobilize the torso and neck. When they inflate you can barely get to your feet especially if you have short arms. Also the rider could be dazed or have the wind knocked out and not be able to breathe. I had a horse stumble on the flat and go head over heels with me doing the same. He scrambled up and ran back to the barn while I lay there until I could breathe again and move. Horses get frightened, people get stunned. It happens.

1:27 She was hitting the horse incredibly hard with the whip and yanking at his poor mouth. I think he would have made the jump if he had a better rider. Poor guy. I watched the rest and at all the jumps she was practically abusing this poor horse. The horse is a talented horse, he doesn't need "encouragement" with the whip. He also could have given her a clear round on the course if she hadnt have been holding him back so hard on his mouth. With a horse as strong as him, you're not gonna win by heaving with all your weight against his will. I hope that rider is happy with herself. >:( You also see the other riders patting their horse even if they don't clear the jump. The lady didn't. She is not a very good horse owner and shouldn't have entered badminton. If anyone wants to educate me if I have the wrong end of the stick, you are welcome to reply.

I typically don't watch Badmitton because I feel that every year more horses and riders get hurt on this course than on any of the other big name courses of this level. Something needs to be changed. Also wtf with the Frence rider at 5:15, I hope she got carded. Her horse was obviously exhausted, and then had a fall later that looked pretty nasty. Icing on the cake she doesn't even hardly look at her horse to make sure its okay, she goes over to pick up her crop instead. I guess I would have to watch the whole round of Elise, but I don't really understand the hate she is getting. I was reading that she stormed off, but I don't see that at all. People grab her horse right away, so she attends to trying to get her vest off. If you have ever had one of those vests go off, then you would know its hard to move/do anything while the things are inflated. Almost all of the riders whose vests inflate don't jump up and run after their horse first. I don't understand why Elise is getting so much hate for doing the same thing.

Come on people, it's BADMINTON. EVERYONE- spectators, video viewers... riders, trainers, owners- they ALL KNOW what they're getting into when you ride at 1 of the 3 Rolex grand Slam events- PARTICULARLY BADMINTON & BURGHLEY... Everyone knows it's going to be 1 of, if not THE HARDEST xc course in the WORLD, every single year for the past, what, 50 some years?! I don't wanna see horses or riders getting hurt ever either, but I don't think they should dumb the course down either... it has its reputation for a reason!

i'm very late but in her video about what happened, she said she was just really emotional because she knew johnny was tired and obviously it's a huge course. she didn't take him to the vet box right away cause she was sobbing and she got carded for that. but her and johnny are doing really well and johnny is retired now. i get why she walked away. when i have a bad fall, espescially at a show, i usually just want to be alone for a minute and recollect myself

These are only a few riders who had a bad run.There are so many horses out there that compete at badminton and Burghley and they love it.They fly round have the ears forward the whole way round and want to go a second time after they’ve finished

missvulcan Elisa Wallace had no choice. If you look her up she is an absolutely amazing equestrian and her horse Johnny is absolutely incredible. This was a bad representation of Elisa. I have met irl and she is down to earth kind. I asked her about the fall and she said she was ashamed of the state Johnny was in. I hope you understand but I completely agree with you.

If you watch her videos she really really loves that horse. She speaks to him all the time, but Johnny has super good stamina, so they probably got a bit ambitious by pushing it because he hasn't done courses like this before. It would have been hard for her to get him to do the whole thing at appropriate pace because he usually has no problem at all with galloping straight on long courses. I think it was 38mph they reached at one point?

I watched the entire cross country coverage and this course IMO was not friendly to either horse or rider. Too many tiny flimsy angle fences and everything on angles and crazy turns. combination after combination after combination. I really don't like where eventing is headed. Also, too many rider horse combinations lacking experience attempting the direct routes. which they had slower options available. I don't see why there needs to be a combination literally every other fence. it takes the boldness and confidence away from the horses and also steals away the rhythm. there is no reason why courses need to be so technicl cross country. you'd never see any of these things riding across real fields.

Exactly! Of course it's good to have something for the horse and rider to think about, but there's a super scarce amount of those lovely open space jumps everyone enjoys to watch. This doesn't show talent, it shows that the courses are too difficult and too many riders resort to doing something wrong like yanking on their horse to get them to jump these combinations correctly when the riders don't know it themselves.

Eric Winter has taken this sport back 5 years to when fences caused crippling injuries for both horses and riders. Horses who are almost dead on their feet should be pulled up by Eagle eyed officials. Fences should not cause agonising limb damage and tendon muscle strains that will takes years if ever to recover. The British public should push for a badminton which is technically challenging without ever being a danger to the horse. The horse is the looser here as it always gives its all.

There really is a definite need for a LOT more *I mean the quantity AND quality!* of "eagle eyed officials" at ALL events. Ive witnessed soooo many rides that I truly felt the rider should have been carded, eliminated or penalized for dangerous riding or abuse of riding a clearly exhausted, wiped out/over faced horse, or someone who just really looks like they should AT LEAST get a firm "talking to" by an official.... and a lot of times I volunteer to jump judge & if i see something that looks really bad, I don't hesitate to radio in my concerns... but, I'm not an official obviously, and unless other jump judges chime in over the radio and back up what I said, I doubt my concerns ever even get brought up... but uh, yeah, like having 2 *not so eagle eyed!* officials to try& oversee EVERYTHING at a BN-Int. Horse trial with 350 riders is NOT SUFFICIENT, Period! And uhhh yeah that guy on that horse around 6:30... HE shouldve pulled up or BEEN pulled up before that happened, that horse was sooo clearly tapped out it was barely going 450mpm anymore... that was an accident waiting to happen, and it DID.

At least 2 of those rotational falls would have been fatal without the inflating body protector. Having attended many, many events over the years (often as course doctor) i honestly don’t think some riders (especially those competing first time) at Badminton and Burghley appreciate how hard these courses are: they are not just a step up from 3*. And it is SO different riding the course than walking it.

I see that in almost all of these... most of these accidents could've been avoided by 1. Making the course a little more... possible? 2. The riders using their brains If you look at or are walking a course and see that there are lots of dangerous jumps, especially near the end, just scratch. I know that cross country is a sport most take pride in, but the horse comes first, not you. You wouldn't be there if you weren't on a horse, so stop and think if your horse is able to safely navigate the course. I know that no one will listen, but might as well put it out there.

I love equestrian sports, but there's no way anyone can sit there with a straight face and tell me that this isn't as dangerous as horse racing. Because I know at least half the people on here saying "what an amazing horse" or "how beautiful that the horse didn't step on its rider" wouldn't hesitate to call racing abuse. I mean, this is one event and how many falls were there? the rider at 5:41 straight up almost died, too. I'm all for these cross country trials, but if people are gonna call horse racing is abuse then quite frankly so is this. I'm tired of people saying racing should be banned while simultaneously taking their own horse out to things like this.

I first attended Badminton in the late 60's and in my humble opinion believe the commentator's got it spot on.This place is special and competitor's should make sure they and their horse's are up to it.I only watched it on TV but thought some of the horse's and rider's just weren't good enough.Personally I'm not a huge fan of too many technical fences just a few so that it is not a steeplechase.I agree with what you have written..

The thingis you have to have a certain amount of points from other four stars to even qualify. You can just skip in there with nothing behind you. There was a lot of first time badminton riders out there, but that doesnt mean they arent experienced.

As stated I have been attending 3 day Events for over 50 years and understand reasonably well what it takes to qualify for the "biggies".Experienced or not it appeared to me that a fair few of these just didn't appear good enough.Also do you think that Rolex and Badminton are comparable?I am trying to find out this horses breeding,as I understand it he is an Oz OTT.If this is so it may just explain his stamina limitation exposure or maybe he was about to go down with something.And only going on what I have read and seen on here she seems to go for it straight out of the gate and don't seem to fill them up much and Badminton surely isn't the place for those tactics..IMHO..

I think something you need to realise is that the cross country course was one of the toughest to date. The designer as been questioned for it as well. Considering it wasnt just the first timers who struggled says a lot. Johnny (simply priceless) isnt an OTT. Hes been eventing for a long time and is actually known for his speed, stamina and love for cross country ironically. Also what are you going on about? That is the horses pace and was actually commended by the commentators on her smooth and efficient riding earlier in the course. You seem extremely ignorant which if im honest .. Thats a typical mentality of an old idiot whos been around the tracks for far too long.Assuming they know everything with out taking the time to actually look in to real information not their assumptions. That horse in particular had been competing in four star for a number of years but hadnt been to badmitton with Elisa because they are an american team.

Ok you big mouth know all..JOHNNY as he is known to you his long time chum was as you so wrongly pointed out a fully registered OTT racehorse.His TB name is Kalingo Damo,his breeding for racing was quite good and as far as I can see he won 2 races and just over $700. I certainly realised it was a very challenging track and the ground at Badminton can be very tiring at times even when it looks fine. Elisa explained in one of her videos that she felt Johnny was slowing down and tried airing him, she wanted to retire and felt horrible when she fell. She completely blamed herself and regretted it. Johnny is no longer working though now.

This is probably one of the only Xcountry courses that I’ve seen in a long time where the majority of the riders prioritise their horses after the fall. Obviously there will always be that one selfish idiot that doesn’t care about the horse!!! But hats off to the others Xxx

I love jumping! And to be honest... I disagree with A LOT of your guys comments! However... I do belive that the cross country courses are getting a bit too extreme! Even for the all star best of the best horse and rider. People have to remember... this isn’t showjumping! The jumps don’t move! In cross country the jumps are solid and u early can see through them!

Hannah Sweens Yes. Some of the riders wear air vests. The vests are connected to the saddle, so if the lanyard connecting the vest to the saddle disconnects, the vest goes off

Yea Johnny was dead tired she should have pulled him up. Bothered me that she didnt even walk over to him once she was on her feet. He was completely blown out and she should have at least overseen his care. Hard fall for both but she jumped up seemed ok. Brutal course, I think Eventing needs to have courses that majority of riders can complete.

She was so emotionally and physically exhausted (as was Johnny), not to mention she was winded from the air jacket so that was her first thought, to get it off so she could breathe properly. After that her only priority was taking care of John. She absolutely adores that horse, she wasn’t doing anything bad by taking a minute for herself.

Brave and intelligent horses are needed, with matching riders, all the fences require the right speed, line and determination, the rider can provide all 3, but if the horse second guesses you or isn’t happy with something it goes wrong. It also goes wrong when the rider misses one of those 3, sometimes that’s when your lucky and your brave horse saves the day. A true partnership is required to do this

My advise is when their half way through the cross country that's when the horses switch too the riders an make them finish. I am a rider an would not subject this to my horse he deserves not be ran into a white foam no matter how much he might be in shape an not raced over a course with jumps, hills, valleys, an creeks until exhaustion. I'm sorry there so tired they either refuse the jump or can't stick the landing an basically either rider bails or the horse gets hurt because it crumbles under its weight. An it either limps away or its struggle to hold itself up with all fours trying not to collapse from pain or shock. Were's the Vet. I want to see a vet for every jump especially when we get closer to the end. An all I see is people applauding a person physically beating an exhausted horse over a jump. It's not right. So yes the last half of the competition the horses will be mounting an riding the riders while beating an spurring them on cheerio an all that.

I love how onest some of these horses are they always try there best even when there riders treat them like I treat Barbie dolls(: You can see weather a horse has a good bond or a bad bond with there rider Sadly the majority or the riders that have a good bond with there horse in this vid is lower than the people that have a good bond. I event to and know for 1 that the bond between the horse and rider is more important than the amount of money you win or the size of the garland that you win

Some of these horses where exausted, too tired to galop so to jump... Riders should be disqualified when there's signs of exhaustion from the horse (and if there is a rule it should be more severe). It's already dangerous so it's only a disaster in the making!

people need to learn to LET GO OF THE REINS when they fall. its really not that hard. if i fall off, the first thing i do is let go of the reins. its become a natural thing to just do it; its not only beneficial to the horse, but also beneficial to me. so, lets say if my horse bolts, i wont be dragged. i also wouldnt be hurting my horses face in the process of holding on for literally no reason. yikes.

C'est démentiel de faire des parcours aussi durs, pour des couples, qui, rappelons-le, doivent se taper 3 épreuves ! Le Cross, le Dressage, et l'Obstacle ! certains de ces chevaux auraient pu se blesser gravement, et certaines combinaisons sont limites dingues... il faudrait totalement repenser cela, ni les Cavaliers, ni les chevaux, quel que soit leur niveau, ne sont là pour se blesser, chuter à cause d'obstacles mal pensés.

For one that course is way to difficult and for two you can see the horses were shaking there heads and opening there mouth because they are pulling on the reigns way to hard I feel sorry for the poor horses I'm not saying these people dont care about the horses(even know some of them dont)I'm just saying there too heavy handed weather they say so or not.

Its been years since I've ridden and I was never a jumper or did show, just pleasure riding, but that course looks so dangerous for both horse and rider, in particular the triangle jumps. Also some of the riders were horrid in their riding form. Sorry but if you are bouncing around that badly in the saddle something is wrong! Its no wonder some of the horses refused the jump, they were probably confused by their rider.

I love eventing/Cross Country and always wanted to have gone to Badminton or Burghley but never managed it. 🙄 oh well but watching these it brough back some great memories, some funny others painful lol 😆 But as a true equestrian we get back up and carry on. These are very tough and truly test both horse and rider. May the sport live on in true British style 🐎💯
