Nick & Richard: If you guys ever need to replace the arches, might I recommend using heat-set inserts instead? They are installed by pushing the insert into a slightly undersized hole with the blunt tip of a soldering iron. The heat is transferred through the insert to the plastic locally, softening it and allowing the insert to slide in. They are much stronger than threaded inserts, I've used them on a 3D-printed intake manifold where the plenum halves were held together with them with no issues.
@wagonista4 жыл бұрын
Also to add to this, PLA is a very brittle plastic and may deform on a hot sunny day. Glass or carbon filled vinyl material is available for 3D printing and is better for end-use. But from the video, it sounds like the plan is to create molds and make these in carbon fiber, a la instagram's @3D_magic_mike.

14:16 Don't think heat-set inserts will work with the fiberglass or composites Rich said they're going to make the actual arches out of. These ones are still intended to be patterns for making a mold, rather than for actual use...and the current inserts are there so they can fit the temporarily and ensure the attachment points are in the correct position.

@atsernov4 жыл бұрын
@@UkraineTrain21 That doesn't change the brittleness or the sensitivity to heat, just laminates it like a windshield so that if it cracks or breaks it doesn't fall apart. I suppose if you used actual resin and fiber it would help it keep shape in heat. Also, it makes a lot of sense to make molds. Once you have a good buck a mold is not terribly hard to make and you can reproduce the flares easily if you ever stuff one up on a cone or barrier. (they'll be autocrossing this thing) Once the mold is made you can still use the buck (and see how well these hold up on a car). Its not virgin PLA that'll be exposed to sunlight so I wouldn't be worried about UV. Temperature however is absolutely a concern. I'm so very glad to see this episode on the day it was uploaded. Thank you for that! The episode was marvellous, but some of the design choices left megalithic question marks dangling by the thread.. Now you have two threads on either side of the brass fitting. the finer is holding a hard metal with a file-like surface, packing exponential amount of friction compared to the plastic side. There the thread is coarser, and the material is softer and more brittle. Based on pure math, the fitting should become unthreaded every time when the bolt is rewound. When you get to the final version, I'd suggest you fit those brass fittings with proper thread glue, or simply panel glue. Softer glue seam would give those wings a fighting chance to stay with the car throughout the entire race. Remember, it's not just rocks and sticks you need to prepare for. The sheer wind resistance those flaps pack, will give those mini wheel arch attachmentpoints a complete run for their money. Other than that, a very handy job!
@Azlehria4 жыл бұрын
Self-tapping threads behave somewhat differently from pre-formed threads. Externally-threaded inserts have been used successfully in a wide variety of materials for many decades, so your theory does not hold up in practice. Try the math again for an _elastic-deformation, negative-clearance_ thread on the outside.
@oikkuoek4 жыл бұрын
@@Azlehria If the outside thread were mirrored, then the fitting would hold perfectly without additional glue. But, in this setup, the outside thread does not hold as much static friction as the inside thread does. Surface area is smaller, and the material is softer, and the overall layout (hard male, soft female) brings the odds to success down even more. Now, if the screw that holds the part in place were made from polymer, then there would be no problem, the screw would thread in and out without compromising the fitting, but the screw is basically a file, grinding the bronze fitting as it threads in. The outside thread is acting more like a plane or a chisel, forming more uniform cut to the material. this cut has some holding properties due to the "against the growth" effect, but again the material choices, the difference in the surface area and the angle of the slope surpasses that effect.
@Azlehria4 жыл бұрын
@@oikkuoek "And yet it moves." Threaded inserts _are_ commonly used and _do not_ routinely fail to hold in place. They're used as repairs and original reinforcement; in plastic, metal, wood - even sheetrock. _Because they work._ Certainly they do fail: anything can fail. But those failures are vanishingly rare _in proportion to their use._
@oikkuoek4 жыл бұрын
@@Azlehria You still fail to realize the forces these particular fittings, and the chosen materials are up against. Yes, you can hold up a painting on a dry wall with this type of fastening, but if you apply any excess force to the fastening, it will fail. These brass fittings will hold on their place for a while, that's obvious, but my point was, they will not last mounting and re-mounting. The difference between frictions between treads is against that. I know this from experience too, not just math, by dismantling similar setups after use, and doing damage research on failed parts. And they no not work. They only offer a cheap option for a quick fix to a problem that occurred in the design phase. And yes, it is basically possible to make this type of fitting work without additional adhesive, but not with the materials chosen. That is why I made the warning and repair suggestions in the first place. You can by all means keep boosting your ego around this subject all you want, but try to stay on the subject at hand, please.

@@MrJohn5791 Or it could be red mould release, since Rich says @ 14:16 that these are still going to be used to make moulds, and the actual arches are still going to be made of fiberglass or composite.

@@aussiebloke609 I think that they were planning on using the 3D printed parts as the actual arches (why else would they fit the M5 Heli coils?), if that didn't work they would then use them as patterns to create moulds and make them out of fibreglass (or Carbon fibre?) instead.
@talec1843 жыл бұрын
Those guards look fantastic! For durability have you considered a spray in bed liner product on the underside of the arches, my bed liner has remained intact even after dropping three yard front loader buckets of stone and gravel in from a height of 5 feet.

Nice job from you and Ivan. As long as you don't hit anything or let the car sit in the sun for too long the arches will probably work fine. What you should keep in mind is that PLA becomes brittle at low temps. In the long run 3d printed molds to make arches from fiberglas is probably the way to go, especially considering the overhead of 60 hrs print time and then postage for one arch.

10:20 A quick FYI about the threaded inserts- for 3D printed plastics, you can use heat-set inserts rather than self-tapping inserts. You install them with a soldering iron and the ID does not have to be as precise. It might save you a couple steps on the next build. The heat-set inserts are also made of brass. And while you might say brass "doesn't rust" it most certainly does oxidize and my old, unsafe corroded brass scuba regulator would certainly disagree with that misleading assessment.

Love the video guys. One thing to consider on these printed fender flares is heat. I've designed and printed a few smaller parts for my classic car and mechanically PLA can be decently robust, but on something like a car that sees hot summer weather as well as heat from a warm engine, the parts can get weak. The glass transition temp (temp at which it weakens considerably) for PLA is only about 60°C. Yeah way hotter than the ambient air, but an engine bay could easily see +100°C. Curious to see how these hold up in the long run.

With the paint being sprayed like that, red could look pink. That said, there's a Mini running around my town in the summers that is a metallic/candy pink with a Metallic gunmetal gray roof, and it looks absolutely fantastic. So pink wouldn't be the worst choice for a Mini... not sure how it would look against the gray parts they powdercoated earlier though.

Throttle Stop Garage has some really good videos on mold making as well as what it takes to use carbon fiber. Mike Patey would be another good one for composite work. I think you'll find PLA "moves" over time and isn't great with heat - sunlight can deform it. Absolutely awesome for molds though and was happy to hear you guys ar e considering it!

3d printing is amazing for car stuff. I had a mate print me some trumpets for my bike carbs couple years ago and they work great. With a bit of filler and paint you cant even tell its plastic. It really is the future of making custom parts. And the best thing is, even if those arches break, you have a file enabling you to print thousands of them or you can even sell the file to anyone who needs them. Finding someone who can scan and modify the model is the hard part.
