Actually it's Satanael, which is not the same as Lucifer exactly. Satanael is the figure in Gnosticism which opposes Yaldaoboth, or the Demiurge. In Gnosticism, the Demiurge may have created the Earth and Man but he was never the True God (the Lord of Spirits) but instead a mistake born from Sophia ("God's Wisdom", literally) and Chaos (Matter). When Sophia's mistake was discovered, the Demiurge had already created Man and gifted him with the spark of divinity, i.e. a Soul. But the divine soul was never meant to be trapped in the material world, bound by limitations such as emotions, attachments and greed and the fear of death, nor was it meant to be eternally kept within a garden for the Demiurge's amusement. And so the Lord of Spirits and Sophia sought out Satanael, one of the Demiurge's faithful creations, and told him the truth of existence. They told him that to save the eternal soul of Man, he would need to help Man to obtain knowledge of good and evil, and to turn them towards enlightenment. This would lead to the 'War in Heaven' as per the Gnosticism interpretation of that myth, at least. Funny enough, in terms of the Abrahamic faiths, Satan and Lucifer were originally distinct entities as well. Satan is the King of Demons as per the original creation myth under YHVH (Yahwh, Jehovah, take your pick), where 'Demons' in this case were literal natural disasters like disease, earthquakes, tornados, and other plights upon God's Creation. YHVH subjugated Satan and made him swear fealty, whereupon Satan would instead act as God's Judge and the Temptor of Man. Satan's "job" in this regard was to tempt men with sin in order to test their virtue and integrity. Lucifer, in the meantime, was the archangel of the morning star.

@@Terralventhe to add to this if i recall correctly in some Kabbalah variations Satan was also referred to as Ha-Satan before he fell and that a different Angel called Samael was seen as a bigger threat compared to Satan due to them being literally "The Poison of God" as in the antithesis to Yahweh and his creations. Samael was also the husband of Lilith and a member of the Qipploth that opposed the Sephirot. Of course im possibly wrong about some of this, its been a few years since i brushed up on my Kabbalah mythos
