As an actor, I spent so much time dealing with people going on and on about how I look so knowing that one of my favorite actresses thinks its garbage as well is really helpful and inspiring. Man, I love her!

@BLAIR M Schirmer She‘s indeed very beautiful but remember that she‘s done roles in which she‘s terribly ugly like Professor Trelawney in Harry Potter and Nanny McPhee.

Yeah, and it strikes me listening to other BAFTA videos how oft-repeated the message of "do what you love and do it well, and eventually, that will get recognized regardless of zeitgeist" I begrudged the Oscars for being artificial and shallow, but now I don't care about the Film Academy because I realized that BAFTA has been doing it *right* all along...

Emma Thomson has always been one of my favourite actresses, ever since The Remains of the Day in the early 90s. But I've only recently started to listen to her outside of films, for her accent, funnily enough, which I've always loved. It didn't take me long to realize what an amazing human being she is. Chapeau bas!

This woman is a perfect example of why British actors are so damned good... they'll do anything, without reservation or fear. And do it well.
@moniqueweasley57273 жыл бұрын
American actors are better than British actors generally, more believable and truthful, just because they had great teachers such Strasberg, Meisner, Adler, Hagen that founded great schools. She's still amazing, don't get me wrong.
@tiffsaver3 жыл бұрын
@@moniqueweasley5727 I'm an American actor. I wouldn't say that we're necessarily BETTER than our British cousins, only DIFFERENT. For example, we could never produce a Sir Lawrence Olivier, but they could never produce a Marlon Brandon, you see?

I've always had tremendous respect for Emma Thompson not only for her brilliant acting skills but also as a person. Watching this video catapulted my respect for her. The advice about actresses challenging the reason why they should be skinny and model-like was pure gold! Hollywood and the film industry in general needs to hire more actors and less models (most of whom can't act). The pressure to "look good" drives too many actors (men & women included) to focus on plastic surgery, unhealthy diets and obsessive exercise regimens rather than develop their craft. Go Emma!

When people talk about the role of Women in films, I think they mostly think about the kinds of roles that are being offered to women... I think the role of Women in films is precisely what dear Emma was talking about. Be yourself, go out and play against character, do foolish things if only for the learning experience. Hell, that's how the Men do it.... The limits you impose on yourself are the only thing that keep you from achieving your goals. Just think of the immortal Dame Judy Dench, Meryl Streep, and countless others who devoted their lives in telling stories through the medium of film. Do you believe even for a second that they ever worried about how they would look on screen? Even in their ugliest characterizations , I still marvel at their beauty! Simply because, they let themselves be the vessel through which the truest form of Humanity is allowed to shine... the story is all that matters. The actor is merely there to take us away from our daily ill-begotten misconceptions of how we perceive our universe in all its quirkiness and awkwardness. Thank you dearest Emma, you ROCK! :)

Thanks ms Thompson for showing your concern for young women who are too early sent to the world without guidance. Parenthood and the idea of "it takes a village to raise a child" is somehow lost, and thats why celebrities should as well see their responsibilities as role models and what side they are letting the public life to embrace in them.

Don't do things just for the money. Or, take on anything that pays the bills. Unless you have the luxury of a parental safety net which will help you to 'establish yourself' through 'connections'. Be the daughter of Phyllida Law, if at all possible. Forgive me. I love Emma Thompson. Her heart is definitely in the right place, but please!

Wow, so incredibly naive...or just plain bad...advice. If the producers (i.e. money) want someone with a particular "look" for a role, then that's what they'll get. It's so easy for someone blessed by beauty and aging gracefully to blather on about not worrying about looks. Whether movies, tv, or even plays, it is EASY to see ugly, fat, and/or old people RARELY get the best parts...unless that's what is needed for the character (e.g. Falstaff, elderly character, etc.). So telling young actors they should combat that...will leave most of them unemployed (or more models getting acting gigs).
