This little roadside diner in Newberry Springs, CA was featured in a 1987 German movie and is now very popular with German and French tourists, bikers...and anyone looking for a solid breakfast in this part of the desert!

I love the film Bagdad Cafe 1987 Comedy · A lonely German woman ends up in the most desolate motel on Earth and decides to .... This movie exemplifies how one person in the right place can affect a community of lives.

Bagdad Cafe is actually a really good film. Sure it's quirky, but the characters are likable, the actors mesh well together, the camera work and color filters make the viewer almost feel as they are a guest in the same rundown desert motel. The soundtrack is also hauntingly beautiful. It's a good film to watch when you want to watch a more "human" film instead of the typical run-of-the-mill summer blockbuster.

I just love those desert areas! Looking at the sky at night out in the mojave is simply mind blowing!, you can actually tell the curvature of the earth, its something I will never forget. I miss going there ever since I broke my back and became a paraplegic I've been unable to go. But thankfully I have wonderful memories of traveling with my mother, rest her soul.

So, I’m watching Huell Howser’s Road Trip back in the 90s when he showcased The Bagdad Cafe and being familiar with SoCal in general because I grew up in San Diego, I knew where the place was but I didn’t have a car to get there. So in 2004 when I bought my brand spanking new Tacoma truck, I made it a point to retrace a bunch of Huell’s footsteps. And Bagdad Cafe was on the top of my list. So I drove into the area south through 29 palms and Bristol Lake and onto the 66 towards Newberry Springs. I got a real nice greeting at the Bagdad Cafe when I got there. What I was really looking for was the picture of Burt Lancaster that was hanging on the back wall. During Huell’s interview he asked him who that was in the picture and he couldn’t remember and it just cracked me up that who in the heck could not recognize Burt Lancaster from back in the day! But unfortunately the picture was gone. So I had big fun and of course I got my Bagdad Cafe T-Shirt to commemorate the visit and continued on to Death Valley since I just so happened to be in the neighborhood… lol

Been at the Cafe and had a Jack Palance burger. The place was unimpressive with no air conditioning with a fair dose of dust and flies. A couple semis outside creating clouds of dust. But in the middle of a 90 degree table with a window, a bus load of tourists entered and overwhelmed the limited spàce amidst all the paraphernalia and stickers. It's truly a piece of Americana. As corny as it sounds, it was a once in a lifetime experience to just be there.

When I was a kid, I lived in that motel just to the west of it on a semi-permanent basis (the same one they used in the movie). The cafe was called the Sidewinder then, and my grandmother used to give me $5 for lunch every so often. I'd walk over and get a burger and a coke. There was still some traffic on the old Route 66, but mostly it was locals that kept the cafe in business.

It used to be the sidewinder café and Motel once upon a time just like sidewinder Road is now Outlet Center, Drive in Barstow. Then whoever finds locations for Percy Adlon before he made his timeless 1989 classic film here forever changed it to Bagdad cafe. there are very few movie locations that are as famous and transcendent as this one. Especially with the French, where are the cult following of this movie is phenomenal, putting the Bagdad Café on the European tourist map.

Thanks for going and doing this video. I was going to take a ride and see what's going on in Baghdad and now I don't have to go. Going to see if you have a video about Amboy, once again I won't need to go thank you. If you go to the little town of Caliente on the backside as the road exits this little Whistle Stop, the sign says something about going to Lake Success or Porterville. This is a one-lane road with cattle Gates and telephone poles are like 10 feet apart, that must mean the wind blows very hard. I'd like to see that so I don't have to go.

I'm glad you stopped there. I watch the movie, Bagdad Café at least twice a year. It's interesting how troubled people from different walks of life ended up becoming one big family. Like you, I didn't care for the movie when I first saw it in the 80's, but when I saw it again several years ago I paid more careful attention to the characters and what made them the way they were. Wonderful, quirky little movie.

Thank you so much for visiting Newberry Springs. The Route 66 stop Bagdad is no longer there. People have chip away everything. The cafe in Newberry Springs adopted the name "Bagdad Cafe" because the original is no longer there. But the movie continues to endure and I am happy for it. Again many thanks for going and shooting a video of the town and cafe.

Have drove route 66 quite few time a lot of roadside attractions back in the day . Funny went too pizza place accross street from base . Had beer while waiting for pizza . A bunch of big bad looking bikers came in all dressed in leathers . I got my pizza and went outside , the whole parking lot filled with mopeds and skuitors . About pissed my pants laughing so hard . All those guys would be laughed out of town in my Nick of the woods . Never will forget that as long as I live . Do you have any funny stories about Germany when you lived their . Loved German beer and food and a lot of good people . Be safe in your adventures .

Greetings from Peggy Sue’s in Yermo! Was looking to watch the movie The Bagdad Cafe thinking it might be on KZbin when I found this older video of yours I hadn’t watched. The Bagdad Cafe today makes me sad. It is a shell of its former self during its Huell Howser Hay day. I first came here with my Dad in 1994 during our first Route 66 roadtrip from LA to Tulsa, Ok. It was only 6 years after the movie and it was called The Sidewinder Cafe then. It was a fully functional cafe then with none of this graffiti. In 2001 I was back and actually met regular General Bob. The one good thing about our last visit in 2017 was we got to meet longtime owner Pierre Andre. Hmmmm. Should I go back again today?
