Hey Dan, late comment on an old video, but I just received my latest order from you, (which was perfect by the way, the fish don't even seem to notice) and I wanted to say that because of the way you pack individual fish and your obvious personal interest in their welfare you are the ONLY seller I feel comfortable with adding the shipping water into my tanks. I usually float the bags and use the " drop and flop" or " float and drop" into a net or whatever it's called but with your fish I just float and cut the bags and let them go. I don't even bother with quarantine and have never had a problem. Thanks for not using "breather" bags. What a pain those are.

If you could, I'd love more info on the oxygen set up, heat sealer and bag discription/source. Looks like a great system. I'm so tired of rubber bands :) We already go to a welding shop for nitrogen and CO2 fills, so the oxygen source should be simple enough.

Why don't you use tank water to ship? Does the new water have the same parameters? Because it's not all about aged water.
@DansFish
@DansFish 6 жыл бұрын
Tank water if full of all kinds of stuff I don't want in the shipping bags: Nitrate, bits of decaying detritus, lots of small critters, etc. All those things can cause the water quality in the shipping bag to degrade. Just to be clear, I NEVER use new tap water to ship fish. Aged water which has been gassed off works the best for me. And yes, it is the same water that is auto-fed into the tanks so it has roughly the same temp, hardness, pH, etc. I add Seachem prime and some salt to it, and that seems to do the trick.

@DansFish Hi Dan 👋 Great video as always. In my tanks, tap water / prime go directly into my tanks for water changes. In this situation due to my tank maintenance, would I be able to ship with freshly declorinated tap? Or should I let the bucket sit out for a few days? I don't use a reservoir of water, the tanks are filled directly from the tap. Thanks.

Hi Dan! Shipping has been going very well, thanks to your videos! I shipped about 30 rams before winter set in and now a few more since it warmed up. I am so excited that not one fish has died, and everyone has been extremely pleased with their condition upon arrival. Now, I want to start shipping some angelfish. Do you ship them the same except maybe use a little larger bag than the rams? The angelfish are quarter to half dollar size. Do they ship ok with using Priority Mail 2-3 day transit? Thank you again for your great videos and any advice you can offer about the angelfish! Wendy
@DansFish
@DansFish 5 жыл бұрын
Hello Wendy, Glad to hear your shipping is going well!!!!! I ship angelfish the same way, but I use a 6" x 14" bag. I stand the bag up and crimp the corners horizontally across the sides so that the bag stands up like a paper lunch sack. This gives the angelfish a bit more or a footprint and cramps them less. With this approach, they do just fine in Priority 2-3 day.

My husband helped me see it in my mind, and what a great idea that is to give angelfish more room! Thanks again for being willing to share your knowledge! 😊

thanks for sharing! New Sub! one question for you, do you stop feeding fish before shipping? if so for how long?
@DansFish
@DansFish 6 жыл бұрын
Howdy Pittsburgh, Great to see you here. I've viewed all your ram breeding vids and I like them very much! Yes, I always fast the fish for 2-2.5 days before shipping day. Then, I often catch the fish the morning of shipping day and place them in a container or an unsealed shipping bag for 4-5 hours. Then I check all the containers/bags for poop and change the water on any that have poop in them before sealing them up for shipping. Livebearers and others, I will often fast, then catch the night before shipping day and put them in a container. The next morning the container will be full of poop and I can transfer the fish to bags with clean water for shipping. I ship Mondays, so I usually give the last feeding to the fish being shipped on Friday. Hope that helps! Dan

Dan, how do you ship fish in hot weather? Is it something that can be done?
@DansFish
@DansFish 5 жыл бұрын
Hello Jones, Good question! Sure fish can be shipped in hot weather. It is really just the reverse of winter shipping. ..it just takes a well insulated box and a cold pack instead of a heat pack.
@DansFish
@DansFish 5 жыл бұрын
Also, if it is really hot, it can help to have the package held at the customer's post office so it is in a temperature controlled environment until the customer can pick it up. This works well in the cold weather as well.
@jonesnw3219
@jonesnw3219 5 жыл бұрын
Dans Fish thanks for your response! Nobody has a video out there that shows how to do this. I know you said it’s basically the same as cooler weather except cold pack instead of heat pack, but I think a lot of people would appreciate a video titled “Shipping Tropical Fish in Hot Weather.” Thanks again for your help!

@@DansFish that's really nice of you to offer. I used my son as a the guinea pig for my first shipment, but that was before I had all of the equipment to be able to ship like you are doing. I live in Arkansas, and he lives in Colorado. Two fish made it, but a tiny one didn't. I think that was because it was too young. I forgot about the change in altitude so I think that also contributed to the problem for the little one. After that shipment, I found the dispenser (air gun) on Amazon. I called parts places, but they weren't able to help me. I think the problem was with the breakdown in translation from a woman (me) to a guy and trying to ask for something like a dispenser gun (they're not all like you, Dan). I think I'm ready to ship now, but I do have one more question... would you say you are using about 4 to 6 oz. of water in each 4" bag? That's what it looks like to me. I'm going to try my second shipment next week using your techniques and equipment (Uline, 4 mil bags, etc.), and if I have any problems, I will take you up on using you as a guinea pig to tell me what I am doing wrong. Thanks again! Wendy

Wendy, I'm sorry, but your comment with the "amount of water in a bag" question got lost in the shuffle and I just saw it! This is probably too late, but, in the small bags, I use 1/2 - 3/4 cup of water. In the larger bags I use 1.5 - 2 cups of water. Hope the shipping is going well for you!

This is a great companion video to the 'how to ship fish' video you did a year ago. It does show boxing, insulation, etc. My fish arrived alive, in great condition, and the packing job was the most efficient I've seen. Thanks for all Dan! kzbin.info/www/bejne/bWWTc6GjiNCHh8U
