Thanks mate. I've been a drummer in a pipe band in New Zealand for 40 years. Our daughter turns 10 next month. Shes decided to learns the pipes then. At the tender age of 49 I will learn with her. I often thought of learning the pipes but have always procrastinated. I plan to continue being a band drummer but having 4 tunes as a base for my own playing enjoyment as well as playing at a birthday, wedding etc etc, If I become good enough of course.

not really a bagpipe guy but I notice this chanter really puts a toll on your face muscles, so it's great excercise for brass players like me that got friggin' braces on their teeth, specially the Bb and higher trumpets.. might as well learn how to play this thing in the mean time

So is a bagpipe just 1 octave? There's no semi-tones or half steps in a bagpipe? So is a Bagpipe just basically like one of those recorders we had in 4th grade with a big air sack attached? Also what key do most pipers play in?

marotodemolay, how are you ? I am a brazilian bagpiper maker and player. The GHB (great highland bagpipe) plays these 9 notes from G to A in a myxolidian scale. The galician bagpipe, for example, plays more notes, I mean, 14 notes. A chromatical scale. We made the 2 bagpipes and others too.

Hi all -- I've just started using a chanter (about 2 weeks in to it) - can anyone tell me if it makes a difference which hand I have on top? (that is, when I play bagpipes) - I have been using my right hand on top as it comes more naturally (despite being right handed)

Left on top always. Both hand will do plenty of work.

Can you play sharp and flat notes on tje bagpipe? If posible, would you upload a vid explaining finger positions to play em (sharp and flat) And just as a curiosity is the chanter (the part with the holes) the same lenght as a sweet flute?

Yes you can play some sharps and flats, (the C and F are already sharpened by default), but the other notes are not used.

Order of holes is as follows: Thumb, top hand, bottom hand. X = closed, O = open. C natural: X XXX XOXO F natural: X XOX XXXO (These notes maybe incorrectly written as Cb and Fb.) However, these notes are really only used in modern music.

Why does this practice changer have such a duller, poorer tone than the changer on a full set of bagpipes? The ones on the bagpipes sounds higher and crisper, and brighter. (Not discrediting your skill)

Is it possible to have hands that are too small to play? I am having a hard time stretching my fingers and it's hurting my wrist
@kellymccorkle18057 жыл бұрын
It could be possible. They do offer "youth chanters" that are a little bit smaller. But I will also ask this,... are you sure you are not holding the chanter too tight? The soul (bottom) of your practice chanter should rest on a table while you are practicing. The mouthpiece just resting on your lips. Your fingers shouldn't really hold the chanter as much as just covering the holes. If your holding too tight, then your wrist will start to hurt and your fingers cant move like they should to play. I hope this helps.-Kelly

If you have a plastic reed in your practice chanter, try putting a rubber band on it, not to tightly, and sliding it up or down to get the desired sound.

Hi Joshua, I am left handed can I learn to play with hands reversed?
@ricardogadelha500310 жыл бұрын
It's not totally unheard of to have your hands reversed and still play with the bag under your left arm. The only downside is that you will have maybe a harder time striking in the drones and to play the lowest note and specially do birls. I'm getting a practice chanter in some months and I'm definitely gonna play reversed. I play the penny whistle and I've tried with my right hand under (the normal way) but I simply cannot do it. In the end, just play in the way that it's most comfortable to you. Take a look at this picture of Donald MacLean of Lewis: i168.photobucket.com/albums/u196/pancelticpiper/donaldmaclean.jpg
@BagpipeBaz018 жыл бұрын
OMG..... if your left handed, play in reverse ??????....................Bagpipes are not designed to go under any specific arm.... if your left handed you buy left handed bag! I have several left handed players in my band...... no issue.

@NeilGerstenberg10 жыл бұрын
Correct me if I'm wrong... but the scale should be a mixolydian mode starting on the b7. If you're tuned in A the notes would be G, A, B, C#, D, E, F#, G, A. You are playing and singing a G major scale from the lowest note.
@allylilly37729 жыл бұрын
Thank you lol that was driving me crazy. I knew it wasn't a proper scale but I wasn't sure what it was 😂
@nachora2839 жыл бұрын
+Joshua Anderson Finally!! I find someone thats knows what he is talking about...!! It was driving me crazy as well because everybody keeps saying that scotish pipe is tuned in SI/B bemol... Using the piano and looking at some written music I was able to see a couple of # at the key (meaning Fa or F and Do or C are #, a semitone higher and that is exactly Re or D major...!!! At least, when Joshua sings the scale with his voice, he is making the right Fa/F and Do/C correctly a semitone higher! Thanks a lot!!!
@NeilGerstenberg9 жыл бұрын
+I Ruipérez I think it's useful to know that it's the same notes as D major... but essential to realise that the tonic for most of the music is A (or whatever note comes out when lift only the bottom little finger), and the sound is that of the mixolydian mode... Not the sound of D major!
@jonathanrowe55497 жыл бұрын
So if someone could shed some light here, that'd be great. I've started the chanter, but I actually read music. so is the chanter poorly tuned? or is bagpipe music written for a majority of musically illiterate musicians, so they don't write in sharps, since there's no chromaticism to adjust for anyway? should I just imagine 2 #'s in all bagpipe music for my own sanity?
@bobschmob82336 жыл бұрын
So much wrong going on here... it cracks me up how ppl love to reform music and scales and their names.... if we go to the origins there is no need. G mixolydian is A7 from the 7th degree. Neither of these are the origins however if we're talking about eastern music
@mediacreationsusa10 ай бұрын
So, why do you call it C and F instead of C# and F# - isn't this a D major instrument? I guess relative to itself, there is no need? - just confusing since I hear C# and F# - I assume everything you play would be comprised of an octave and one extra note... so there are just the 9 notes then?

When you sang and played the G scale you sang and played an F# not an F
@charliekerns88907 жыл бұрын
I think it's because the bagpipes, if put to a western scale, are in the key of D, so F and C would be sharp, unless played naturally, which is harder for lower reed instruments to produce properly. I'm not sure if that makes any sense, but I think that's why.
