Saka Sirhind refers to a significant historical event in Sikh history that symbolizes supreme sacrifice and resilience. It took place in December 1704 (or 1705) at Sirhind (now in Punjab, India), during the Mughal era. The incident is primarily remembered for the martyrdom of the two younger sons of Guru Gobind Singh Ji, Sahibzada Zorawar Singh (9 years old) and Sahibzada Fateh Singh (7 years old).
After being betrayed by Gangu, a trusted servant, the Sahibzadas were captured by the Mughals and taken to Sirhind. The governor of Sirhind, Wazir Khan, attempted to force them to convert to Islam. Despite their young age, the Sahibzadas displayed extraordinary courage and refused to renounce their faith. Enraged by their defiance, Wazir Khan ordered them to be bricked alive, followed by execution.
The sacrifice of the Sahibzadas is commemorated as an enduring symbol of faith, valor, and dedication to righteousness. The site of their martyrdom is now marked by Fatehgarh Sahib, a revered pilgrimage destination for Sikhs and others. Saka Sirhind is a poignant reminder of the importance of standing up for one’s beliefs, even in the face of extreme adversity.
