I love the music and they Yogic ideal, however, questions remain: Where and how is this "community" of homeless "lovers" with no sense of individuality supposed to "take refuge"? I looked for such an oasis, and my conclusion is that you must build your own, but that requires a sense of determination that can only be sustained by a human with some sense of ego.

Yes, the worship of Shiva, of the lingam, dates back to ancient Tamil culture. As a Hindu brahmin, however, I'd request you to please keep politics out of this, and to enjoy the music. There has clearly been a cultural overlap. When the Aryans came to what is today regarded as the Indian subcontinent, the Dravidians had their own myths and gods, and the Aryan may have adopted many of these, rejected others, and what we have today is an amalgamation; it is hard-no, impossible!-to go back in time and trace the individual histories, religions, mythologies. They're borrowed, adapted, and we should just cherish them as they are, without trying and fighting for ownership over gods.
