Kappa is the malayalam for Casava/Tapioca. If you are served kappa along with rice you shouldn't mix it up with rice. It is to be consumed separately with any non veg dishes. Kappa with Kerala hot fish curry is a fantastic combination. Keralites are very fond of Kappa. Kappa is actually not a native of Kerala, it was brought to Kerala by the Portuguese from Brazil. It's a native of Brazil actually but it is being cultivated in Kerala widely now. You will find that Casava is also grown in the Pacific Island countries like Fiji, Samoa, Tonga etc. It is even available in the grocery stores in New Zealand and Australia, because there are a lot of people from all these island nations who consume Casava and a hell lot of Keralites too who is very fond of Kappa. It is the root of Tapioca that we are consuming not anything above the ground of that plant.
