The book the therapist was reading off was the DSM-5 which is like the official "bible" of psychiatry in the US, it's definitely a reliable source. The facts she said were pretty much correct, what I personally didn't like was how she was using words like "icky" and "gross" to describe certain traits, and over-dramatizing the whole thing. Just my 2 cents

In the psychological community the DSM manual and especially the DSMV has stirred a lot of controversy because of the overdiagnosis that it has caused over its publication. It is just a tool not a bible and a staple , and you can't just diagnose and make assumptions just form it like she is doing

The book she was reading from was the DSM-5, which is a book published by the American Psychiatric Association. The DSM stands for: Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders. The 5 stands for the 5th edition, which was published in 2013, which is pretty recent for book terms. This book is owned by therapists and psychologists to diagnose patients with disorders. So, no, this isn’t just any old ‘book’ Chad, she’s using what people in her field use to diagnose people. One quick google search would have stopped you from sounding like an idiot.

In defence for Chad, I see his concerns. It may be on youtube, but what was the intent? Media is powerful, and I agree people should know better. It maybe obvious to an adult that this is all fake and for entertainment, but if intent of the filming and structuring is mimicking real (professional) documentaries then how could you blame someone for taking it seriously and be manipulated. Shane could mean well, but he was not being transparent enough. With professional, academic works would have all the disclaimers and citing for sources, all that information is important to know especially when dealing with mental health. Personally, my issue doesn't lie with Shane... where it lies is *with the THERAPIST'S* behaviour tbh . I think it's great that she read from the DSM-5 to stay as accurate as she could to actual diagnostic guidelines. In fact, the parts where she read verbatim from the manual are the parts that are fine. But using "gross", "icky", they're "robots with no hearts", "ew disgusting" "we need to take a shower after this" I mean...wow, to completely diminish the worth of these people with mental illness & dehumanize them literally to robots, then continue to label them with her harsh judgements to millions of people (who are hearing this from a licensed therapist no less) is honestly really sad. ..The "no hearts" comment really got to me man. I work with clients with mental health issues and my problem with the second video isnt with Shane but with the so called ''professional''. It's absolutely shocking to me that a psychiatrist would state how any mental illness is ''gross and/or creepy''. As a professional she should be the one trying to destroy those stigma's about mental heath issues. Seeing everyday in my workfield how people with a mental illness can completely isolate themselves from others because they are scared of there judgement about mental illness, it left me completely baffled that she would use such words.

To be honest the therapist shows a lack of better understanding. First of all she called sociopaths "creepy" and "disgusting". I'm sorry but I don't think a serious professional would/should stigmatize a disorder with pejoratives that way. And pretty sure it doesn't describe it as such in the dsm-5. Gangster Disciple I don’t think Shane Dawson is anywhere close to being “washed up”. And I don’t think his sexual preferences really have anything to do with his content. But I agree with the OP, he is this way in all of his videos. Maybe it’s dramatic or disingenuous, but then again, maybe he actually feels the way he says he does. It’s just who he is and how his content is, and it’s been the same in every docuseries he’s made. Also, Kati Morton, was reading from the DSM 5, the official diagnostic manual, which was published in 2013. She is a therapist/psychologist with a Master's degree. Specifically she is a marriage and family therapist. She can diagnose, but she can't diagnose anything outside of the context of her specialty. Marriage and family therapists do deal with people with personality disorders, but ASPD (antisocial personality disorder) is usually a specialty of people working in criminology, law, or in foster/group homes as ASPD usually shows up early on when life is unstable early on. Sociopath and Psychopath aren't medical terms, they do not have a spectrum. But the disorder Kati was talking about was Antisocial Personality Disorder, WHICH IS ON A SPECTRUM! A lot of people with ASPD do feel things, but it's usually kind of flat. There are a lot of factors that constitutes someone as being diagnosed with ASPD, like they need to show signs before age 15, and have a certain number of symptoms or more or all. Etc etc.

Yeah I was gonna comment about the DSM5, it's not just the any book she was reading lol. I'm definitely surprised all three of them didn't know that. Chad seems like he would be one of those cringy people who immediately get on someone's ass for saying that a person may be using "depression" as an excuse. For example, in the recent h3 "We're sorry" video there were comments criticizing Ethan for seemingly using depression to gain sympathy and excuse why they haven't been making new vids despite doing the podcast. It’s what’s called a confirmation bias and that is not good when your goal is to make a scientific analysis of the mind of Jake. The argument is often that Shane is naive. He is naive to what a sociopath is, who jake even is, his history, doesn’t seem to know what a credible source is, but that it’s great that he is asking the right questions. The blind leading the blind is bad, but even worse is the liar leading the blind. From what we’ve seen so far, he’s asking the right questions to the wrong people, which have led his direction towards propaganda rather than an unemotional and accurate assessment of Jake as a person.
