As a 78 year old, just want to say that I think you are doing a great thing. Have no second thoughts as to whether or not you should have embarked on this trip of 18 months, and live with your beliefs that you will have leisurely time and tough times ahead. I have never been able to enjoy the tough times, but you have the right ideas, of accepting them and taking your time to work through them. It will make you all that much stronger as the years carry on. Haven't a clue about bushings and drive shafts and all those kind of things, but admired how you tackled the problem of being stuck on a beach until the replacement parts arrived and the repairs were completed.

I watched all these episodes one by one but if was fun to watch them again all together. I'm from California, born there but I'm Mexican and got dual citizenship and now live in Mexicali since 06, I like to watch videos like these because it shows that the vast majority of Mexicans are good people and very friendly not as they are portrayed on the news, keep up the good work guys.

1000% agree! We don’t speak Spanish very well, so our interactions with the people are limited while we get over the language barrier, but we’re very much hoping to put Mexico in a different light through our films. We’re from Canada and don’t have the same media, nor do we consume mainstream media, so we don’t have the same kind of outlook as many Americans on Mexico. We love it here and the people we have met are warm and inviting. I think we’ll be traveling Mexico a lot more in the future . Thanks for watching!

@@SlowRoamers I’m sorry but please explain to me how you were “incapacitated”, lying on the ground in the fetal position, and those people just left you guys there?!?! What if you’d gotten much worse and needed to be rescued? Meg would have been all alone to deal with it when she didn’t have to be. I wouldn’t leave complete strangers in that situation, much less “friends”. What part of the van life culture, or any civilized society says that’s ok? Maybe I missed something? I sure hope so.

@@alanbierhoff6831 That’s very kind of you to share these sentiments. Although Alex was quite sick (it ended up being his first bad migraine) I didn’t feel like things would escalate, and if they did, we weren’t so far from civilization where I could get him help. Our friends that left were actually in a much worse situation with a broken truck and a flight to catch the in the US, we wouldn’t have asked that they hang back.

In 2016 I rode my motorcycle from Portland to Ushuaia Argentina. I rode south through Baja then took the ferry from LaPaz to the mainland. Worst part was the long border crossings in South America. Flew myself and my bike to get around the Darian Gap from Panama to Columbia. When I got to Ushuaia it was 35 degrees with rain/snow mix. Rode up to Buenos Aires and flew myself and motorcycle back to the states. I was gone 4 months, rarely was at the same place for more than one day. Since then I’ve focused on the extreme north to include The Dempster, Dalton, Tuktoyaktuk, Inuvik, etc. Been there 4 different times, going again in 2025. I’ll be 76 in May. Love your videos!

Hello. I made it back and watched the rest. It was a great time. I also want to say how great and professional all of the production and cinematography is. What you accomplished rivals huge productions I grew up with in the 60's without you having the advantage of a giant budget, crew and aerial camera platforms of old as well as not shooting with 35mm film. And the scoring of this was spot on capturing the flavor of every moment. Truly great work. Thank you again for the ride along!

OMG!!! At 1:21:56 I was thoroughly impressed with your off-road skillz! I carry a sawtooth shovel with me at all times. Amazing what some digging and road widening can do in a pinch! The only time I spent in Mexico while I lived on the boarder was in college...and from that all I can remember is tequila, buckets of beer, and techno music. I like your approach WAY better - fits my introvert self. Mexico is an amazing country with a beautiful culture I truly lost out on in my younger years. It's on my bucket list to rectify that! I like the approach of pick a dirt road that looks decently well travelled and see what's at the end. And I have to disagree with you Alex, you two are true overlanders. Overlanding is not the difficulty of the dirt roads...it is the journey on the dirt roads to the places few have ventured!

Glad you got the repairs done. With all the work you have put into Betty - have you ever considered to turn her into a 4X4 at all?
@SlowRoamers19 күн бұрын
We considered it right from the beginning, but ultimately decided not to for a few reasons: we value travel more than a capable vehicle, having the van down for however long a 4x4 swap would take would be time and money taken away from actual travel. For the scope of our travels, we don’t actually need it, it’s actually easier to adjust my expectations for where we want to go. Having said that, I do want a 4x4, but I don’t think the van is a platform I want as 4x4. It’s top heavy, tall, already overweight and designed for just one purpose, to live in and off-roading our house any more than we already are doing would be a little much. Thanks for watching, glad you enjoyed it?🙌🏻

Do you ever have worries after you have a tough time on iffy roads getting into a camp spot about how the hell can we get out of here? We stayed in a small fishing village on an island in Croatia. The road along the seafront had no barriers or guardrails from the water but the access was very steep and short with a 90 degree turn top and bottom. It was sort of paved but lots of gravel and sand so very slippery. I think I spent 3 days fretting over if we could even get out of there! If it had rained we wouldn’t have made it. Nevertheless speed in a small car with a slippy clutch…we got out!

9:05 there is big controversy with Machaca, as it is a Sonora State regional recepy. the people from sonora will not cook it with that kind of shredded beef, they cook it with a different kind of beef , if you want to learn how to cook sonora style or as someone from Sonora would say, REAL MACHACA Get the recepy from someone from Sonora

Interesting! We had no idea. We are starting to learn about regional foods as we are currently traveling mainland. One day we’ll do some more time in Sonora and maybe find some interesting new machaca dishes. Thanks for watching!

@@SlowRoamers thank you, I am from Mexicali, I live like 10 Minutes from the border crossing you shown in this video. The next time you are in town I will be glad to show you some cool places in my city, most of the people driving through Mexicali never stops at our city and we have so much to offer.

Just for your information... Some Baja Californians find it offensive if you call their home state "Baja. "... Their State is called 'Baja California.' When the Spanish, Tlaxcaltecas and others allies from the Tenochtitlan conquest came to these lands, they named them California and divided them in two; Alta California and Baja California, the 1st one is in the US and the 2nd in México... I have seen several videos, where they always call it Baja, I know, you do not mean it in an offensive way, it is just an effort to bring a little bit of justice to an State that has been struggling to recover it's name for decades... Our Very Own Historian Guadalupe Jiménez is an advocate of this fight. She says, I quote "They stole our land, they stole our name (America), and now they wanna still our name 'California'..."

Thank you for informing us , we really do appreciate you helping us with awareness of this. As you can imagine, it’s hard for us to explore a country and understand the subtle nuances of culture, the meaning of different things and where we may be of offence. You can rest assured we won’t make the mistake again. Thanks for watching and thank you for your comment!

Kevin, thanks for your response. We've been advised of this for the first time in this video, despite having done dozens of Baja California videos. Now we know. Please accept our apologies. It's an error we won't repeat.

Thanks, we were unaware of the cultural significance of the distinct Baja California, but we have been advised a few times since the release of this video. Thanks so much for watching!
