Dr. Louise Bennett Coverley, through many years of research, has provided Jamaica with a vast reference collection of "valid documents reflecting the way Jamaicans think and feel and live". The proud recipient of two Honorary Degrees of Doctor of Letters, one from the University of the West Indies in 1983 and the other from York University of Toronto Canada in 1998 -- is testimony in itself and an achievement which speaks volumes of the high recognition of one of our true Caribbean Gems.

This stage of education about the Jamaican language is such an excellent presentation. Ms. Lou has done such a wonderful job. I found the extended version and listened to it straight through and it was just amazing. I laughed and picked up on some proverbs and lost words to my Jamaican vocabulary. it's good to be educated by these sources. Well done. It would have been so good for others to make recollections of the Jamaican language like these as Ms. lou has done ever so often.

Street cries sound similar to the Gullah / Geechees in Charleston, SC selling their wares in the streets. Everyone swears they're so different!

mdeborah827 I've been to Charleston and John's Island sounds nothing like a Jamaican accent, maybe to others but as a Jamaican I'd never confuse the 2. Not even close. Love the Gullah people good people.

Who can make out the lyrics to "de buggy bruk" ? I heard that this is a song that spread the news of the abolition of slavery, but I don't get the metaphor
