Ba Ji reminds me of mizong/ Aiki jui jutsu/ and a mixture of hsing-i and tai chi. this style/ specific form is very impressive. for those who have been able to stir the chi with the fluidity of movement- while finding the hardness in the softness- watching this form is easy to see its value. the coordination shown here has a lot of power to be found. - thanks for the post, beautiful

There is baji-sparring -- it's called baji-push-hands, like Taiji (Tai Chi) push hands. You do it to get a sensitivity for close-combat energy. There's also Baji lance sparring -- you use 10' lances, which is a great excersise for issuingpower.

i read kenji comics also, and i really love it. Later on the book, he met a bajiquan master named Liu Gekkyu. Did you know that Liu Gekkyu in kenji comic, is the same man as Liu Yun Qiao in this video ?

Bajiquan were chosen to serve as bodyguards to the Chinese Emperors. Most where students of Li Shuwen. Such as Huo Diange bodyguard to Pu Yi (the last emperor of China), Li Chenwu bodyguard to Mao Zedong and Liu Yunqiao secret agent for the Kuomintang and instructor of the bodyguards of Chiang Kai-Shek. As a result Bajiquan became known as the 'Bodyguard' style

liu gekyu! he is trainer for taiwan army. acording to the comic book, he is the last student of the gratest bajiquan master lie sio bun (every name here speled by japanese kanji like lie yun chiao spelled liu gekyu). he's master developed bajiquan to become one of most powerful kung fu in china, beside shin yi ha (secret kung fu in shaolin), taichi cuan, shin yi liu hei quan (six of will), koka, kei, hiso, 72 the art of shaolin,ja (snakes), etc.

@alexdhamp Just about everything :), LYQ practiced Bagua aswell so they were probably doing some 'free form' sparring, while Bagua relies heavily on flowing footwork and whiping motion Baji movements "explode". The footwork is somewhat static like Xing Yi however the secrets to its fearsome power lies in the charging step (where you hear a loud bang), it is not a stamp in itself but it is merely the feet/legs following throughthe movements of your hips turning.

Although it's nice to see masters like this, the videos don't really do justice to their skills. To really appreciate them, i think you need to experience it first hand. Also has we all get older our power starts to decrease. It doesn't matter who you are, or what style you do. We are only Human!!!

Bajiquan was in brought to popular attention in the west largely by the Sega video game Virtua Fighter, as the style that the main character Akira Yuki practices, though none of the many representations of Bajiquan in popular media has ever been very accurate. Other video game characters that use this style are Kokoro from the Dead or Alive series and Xiuying Hong from the Shenmue video game series.

@ooogooman also:) the baji stance training is pretty different from any i've had in Karate or tae kwon do. its not static at all. your always trying to sink lower working your leg muscles. maintaining proper structure in your whole body, let your tailbone sink, lower the shoulders etc.. etc... so its not static. And then theres usually mantis step training afterwards, which is as unstatic as it gets:) 250 word count seems to leave enough out for misunderstandings every time i write:P

I'm reading a japanese comic called "Kenji". Simple name but what is interesting about this comic is that it talks about bajiquan and the history or wushu. On the second book, there's a part where the granpa of the kid, he tells him a story of a Xingyi warrior on how he trained while his master was gone. So, the student kept doing one simple movement for about a year later, when the master came back; that simple punch was explosive and powerful. So, he told kenji to do the same with baji.

By comic, do you mean the manga named "Kenji"? I have heard good things about it. I've also heard good things about baji. I really like what I saw in the video, it looks old. In old fighting styles, the premise was to survive in a fight, as this video shows. I'm not sure what happened when the four grapplers fell down, but the movements where you can see what happens were a joy to watch.

@BadAssBlackOverlord Tell that to Li Shu Wen He said and quote "I never had the feeling to hit a man twice." meaning he killed in one shot. Also it won't be slow motion, trust me. Fights come and go in an instant I'm sure you know that.

@alexdhamp It's sort of like creating a one inch punch the same instant your strike connects in a sense. You begin to step forward and as soon as your center begins to align you twist your body and extend your arm at the same time which also causes your stepping foot to hit the ground causing a loud bang. Simply stamping the ground doesn't give you more punching power. In Daoism this would be a perfect example of borrowing the earth's energy.

Well, it' doesn't look like it, but it uses the same spiralling energy that starts at the Tan-Tien, goes to the legs and back up into the striking arm/shoulder, elbow, hip... whatever. And I'm not talking about Yang-style Taiji --- I'm talking about the original combative-style, Chen-style taiji, which is low, fast and more powerful/violent looking.

@ooogooman Its often better to think of baji as the kata's you start learning when you reach a black belt in karate. To devote a school to only those without thoroughly learning the basics first would be senseless and a waste for the students:) the other systems like mantis are still heavily influenced by the baji though, we often get comments about baji stomping in our mantis forms and such:P

There ARE videos of wushu practitioners doing sparring. They either look totally clueless or else employ the same tactics as any other competition striking art--dancing around a lot, rapid punch/kick combinations, kicking at the legs, etc. For sheer sparring effectiveness, nothing beats Kyokushin karate, IMO. But it, too, falls short whenever grappling is allowed. It's been proven time and again that the winning formula is a mix of boxing, very limited (low) kicking and jujutsu-style wrestling.

Tai Chi and Ba Ji Quan are both internal styles concentrating on building chi, and concentrating controled force. The biggest difference i've noticed between the 2 (besides the obvious techniques) is that ba ji trains explosive strikes and stomping, while tai chi's strikes are slow and precise. if that makes any sense.

@ooogooman you misunderstand me i think. You should learn simpler stuff before baji so your structure is good. so 40 min of stance every training (if your stance is static your doing it wrong;) ) but in the meantime you also train tanglang (mantis), long fist and tai chi quan. The problem with baji has been that it tried to adopt, taught baji First and no one understood anything properly. its a very good system that craves dedication, if one does'nt have that then sure train something else:)

@bm2332 Not remotely true. There are records of Baji masters who killed people in fights on more than one occasion. He's playing nice with them and not trying to hurt, but trying to teach.

@ooogooman maybe is because of lazyness. When people find out that learning Baji is actually hard work they seem to loose interest. Anyone is welcome to train in our club, but there's no point in learning anyone Baji before they at least have proper structure in their stances, and that usually takes 2-3 years. with 40 min stances at least every training. If you just start training everyone before they have that structure its just gonna become "Mc-dojo" where nobody learns anything properly.

@shengxlong I am sorry but I have to respectfully disagree. You cannot kill someone with traditional arts such as these. No. I won't stupidly try to punch them in "slow motion" just so they can counter. I know some boxing and I am well versed in Jiu Jitsu. These guys will not win. Impossible.
