Kyojitsu is not some “advanced-level concept”, it’s a fundamental survival skill. It’s much harder for someone to successfully attack an opponent than to defend against attack; contemporary military tactical guideline is that you want at least a 3:1 numerical advantage.
What’s happening here is setting everything up to get the opponent to attack YOU, when and where you want him to, and a split-second before he’s actually ready (because he didn’t see the distance changing in time) and is still going “WTAF?!?”.
