I think it’s a respect thing. It allows the coaching staff to talk to the players and congratulate them personally before the pick. I think players would prefer the phone call prior tbh. Also the players can actually decline the pick, which nobody has ever done but there is that option.

Usually, the #1 pick in the draft is going to a very bad situation. Thanks to all the shrewd deals that Sashi pulled off, John Dorsey had all that draft capital to turn this wreck around in a hurry. Turns out, Baker may have been the luckiest # 1 pick in the history of the NFL. Of course, Baker is a huge part of all of us Browns fans being lucky.

Dorsey has a pretty darn good history as a GM. He's unafraid to make mistakes, and picks based on what he feels is real talent, ignoring measurables, character issues, etc. Talent shines through according to him and that makes it always work working towards. Another GM might've been afraid to pick Mayfield for a variety of reasons, let alone at the top of the draft. There were definitely safer choices to make if you're an "idealist." I respect someone who sticks to their guns.
