Bakers Beatdown (MY FIRST SWIM)

Baker creek (IV) small beater reel on the first ledge drop. This was my first time on Bakers. Little to no boof stroke, nose dived straight into the pour over. Tried to hang in there but felt like it wasn’t gonna flush me.
I was 1 day away from hitting my 1 year milestone of running white water rivers and I have had zero swims since I started. Thought I was gonna get to complete my 1st year with no swims. Thought wrong. Enjoy!

Yup - No Boof Stroke. One more roll - I think you would of made it out. Glad you're OK.

Agreed. Threw in the white flag too early. At the time I was thinking it was going to recirculate me even if I swam. I wanted to give myself enough breath for that. Looking back at film, I was basically out & should’ve just rolled again.

I've been in that situation myself thought I was still in the mess pulled my deck and was like o should have given it one more roll

You started sprinting right at the point where you actually needed to stop paddling , learn forward to set your boof stroke, then wait till the nose of your boot is just starting to drop then draw, and you have a perfect boof. You have to kill that bad habit of putting your paddel over your head crap (at 0:37). That does nothing, and invites a beating.

This is actually a really impressive fight for your first time swimming. You are doing way too much up top, blindly paddling hard and praying one of your strokes is timed to boof is not a strategy. Set your angle take maybe one stroke on the way in to keep your boat on line, plant the lefty, build pressure and lean forward as you pull your stroke. Never pull a boof stroke until you can see your landing. Sorry for the unsolicited advice.

All good, Still working on perfecting the boof and remembering to actually do it. We scouted the drop and had a game plan and knew what to do. When it actually came game time though the adrenaline was flowing and I just didn’t execute correctly.

Portage that thing. It's a killer. There's no shame in going around. But, then, I guess you figured that out...

Boof stroke would’ve probably made me clear it. Just completely missed it. If I don’t get it next time with a Boof stroke, I’ll portage in the future.

Everyone else successfully ran it & we had safety set. There was no reason not to. I was the weakest link on this trip, the guys gave me the option, you gotta step up at some point. Think I would’ve been fine without a Boof stroke in any other boat than the rockstar.
