So, Master Chan full name was Chan Hon Chung. He ran the HK chinese kung fu association. He studied under Lam Sai Wing. He passed away in 91.

I like the way this documentary takes the time to get inside everyday Chinese life a little bit. Without that it's difficult to put things into a meaningful context.

Many Kung Fu styles focus on form training. Tai Chi is percieved as a meditation-far from it. I also teach traditional Shaolin long fist. My students know the application of each move. I trained under masters who emphasized "no rule fighting". Recently one of my intermediate students (about 5'7" and 50 kg) accepted a sparring match with a 4th degree Dan in TKD. (6' plus 90 kg) "no rules or padding. The TKD instructor was downed 3 times in a row by simply trapping and throwing. Priceless!!

I love your comment. Very few train kung fu as it should be today(over emphasis on Taolu) You sound a great deal like the last two kung fu sifu's I've had the pleasure of training with. Knowing forms is fine, but you have to be able to apply them! Well stated comment(yes I know its an old one but still). Live Well and Train Well.

wing chun is really adaptable, some people can teach it in a way that it actually would enhance your abilities in any fighting, boxing, even MMA, why? because it develops your natural reflexes. Some people teach it 100% physical and adapt it to a more street combat oriented, some teach it and tell you never to use physical strenght and use tension instead, and use breathing. That is more old school, teaching wing chun as an internal style. I still think its almost impossible to knock someone out using the wing chun center line punch like they do, even if you put your whole waist into it, i don't see it happening. Doesn't mean WC is totally useless though. I learned it growing up, i like it.

Dan is amazing. His Eskrima skills are awesome. If you want to know if your martial art is effective face a good Eskrima practitioner.

I just have to say Burce Lee was a great actor. For a person to say that forms are useless (in my experience) means that they havent reached black belt or gone pass 1st dan.
@daboodeef179
@daboodeef179 10 жыл бұрын
I agree. Forms consist of all strikes, blocks, kicks, movements and stances. Saying that forms are useless is like saying learning how to fight is useless.

daboodeef179 Bruce is and was kung fu to say he never got past black belt or 1st dan is a joke your belts our only good to keep your trousers up bruce mastered all styles and made his own jeet kune do were have you been baxter with your experience.
@daboodeef179

john chrysostomou well i believe that belts aren't everything, but he is trying to say that bruce lee had much more to learn because forms are a lot more useful than he thinks. saying that forms are useless is ignorant. and usually the higher level belts have a greater understanding of the bunkai of the form and the real purpose of it. and to say that he was a master at 32 is unrealistic when it comes to the martial arts. he was good, but not the best.

Bruce was not ignorant he was just cocky because he new his worth .I agree he had a lot more to do but dont forget he trained with many masters one of who said he made a deal with bruce for bruce to teach him to dance and he to teach Bruce his style it took BRUCE a week to master it and the master joked that he only learnt 2 dance steps annd bruce moved on to the next master he was the best for his age he new a lot and could back it up imagine if he lived to be old his skill would of been amazing As you can tell im a fan

john chrysostomou today people don't wanna train for 3 hours a day. they wanna do someting simple and easy and learn simple defense. but to learn true martial arts, like master chan said you gotta train for hours each day. I agree with what master chan says
