@ilovelij I'm not the best person to answer your question, but I believe the biggest difference is that some balafons are pentatonic (5 notes to the octave) while others are heptatonic (7 notes to the octave). KZbin user SAMBLADIABATE is a balafon player who has a bunch of videos with pentatonic balafon. Keep in mind also that most West African instruments like the balafon are not as standardized as Western instruments.
