Hi Everyone! I hope you enjoyed this video on some design "rules" to break that can open up your creativity and help you make a space that's uniquely yours. I can't wait to hear about some of the rules you like to break. Have a beautiful day! ❤Liz

I bought a huge amount of display hardware when a kitchen shop was going out of business. I used mismatched hardware on my cabinets throughout the entire home and it looked really great. There were some considerations, for instance I used all silver in one room, and all darker metals in another. Because it was display hardware I got four different metals for instance but all the same pull or knob and this happened with many of the different knobs and pulls so mixing the together still maintained a cohesive and pleasing look. I got so many compliments on this rule breaker.

Another excellent video!! I just recently made a significant change in my living room and am loving it. Took a bit to convince my husband that change was needed but the end result was exactly what I was looking for.

I agree with everything, except I can't quite get to a place where I'd have mismatched dining room chairs. That's one thing that I want to be cohesive.

I love mixing metals for sure, my den has dark reddish walls and some large furniture pieces and does not look smaller, my hardwood floors are much lighter than my wood furniture, I have color pops in some rooms not all, and my style has evolved over the years so changes def happen. So basically the only "rule" I've adhered to is that my dining room chairs do match, although I'd be open to mismatching the end chairs if I needed to replace them. So yeah I've broken all of the rules aside from one! lol

I agree about not always having a pop of colour in every room. Always offer great suggestions Liz!

Hello, I want to break a rule that seems to be that pendant lighting can only ever go over an island. I want to put pendant lighting over my kitchen countertop as I don't have an island. I have a galley kitchen. I 'd like to know how many pendants I would need if I have 8" pendants and 98" in which to hang them from wall to hood fan. Also how many inches do I hang them from the wall? Thank you so much for any info you can give me regarding this rule I need to break.

Hi there! I'm assuming that there are no cabinets or shelves at the counter and you want to use the pendants for task lighting? If so, aim to center the lights on your counter top (they're usually 25" deep). I think three fixtures with one on center and the other two fixtures 2' apart from the center on each side would probably work well. It's really hard to say for sure without seeing your space so use this information as a general guideline. I hope that helps a bit!

Thank you so much for that. And yes your assumption is correct there are no upper cabinets or shelves in this space. The only other thing I can't find information on is how far away from the wall should these be hung. Thanks again.@@BalanceRhythm

@@stormcloud7137 I usually recommend fixtures be no closer than 2'-3" from walls but this would be for your side walls. If you want light on the counter, then you'll want the pendants at about the mid-point which is about 12.5" from the wall or windows on your long wall.

Thank you so. much. They would be on the long/window wall. When you recommended three 8" lights in a 98" space was that because of the #3 rule? There could be five on the same wall as there would be another one on the other side of the range. So four over the 98" section and another one over an 18" counter. I'm just concerned about there being enough light with only 3 or would that be just overwhelming? @@BalanceRhythm

@@stormcloud7137 That seems like a lot but you're the best judge of how much light you need so I would say go with your instincts.

I'm definitely a rule breaker when it comes to style. I love mixing up old things with current more trendy items. I also like mixing wood tones. It's so boring to have everything match. My bedroom suite all matches and now I don't like it. Time to switch up some furniture in there, perhaps move a couple pieces to another room.

I like to mix old/rustic with new,

I agree with all of these except the dining room chairs without backs - impossible to be comfortable or linger for long, and the three different styles are too many. While I would go with different chairs at the ends, three styles are too jumbled. Good ideas otherwise.
