It happens when, after replacing the abrasive wheel and even after leveling it, the sharpening machine vibrates strongly during operation. This is caused by imbalance in the circle. It is necessary to balance the grinding wheel.
A known method of balancing abrasive wheels due to the fact that a metal disk is additionally installed on the shaft together with the wheel with an offset. The disc is displaced to compensate for the existing imbalance in the abrasive wheel.
I do it, it seems to me, in a simpler way, in which it is not necessary to make a disc with a hole.
As a disc, I use lids for glass jars, and to create a compensating imbalance I use plasticine.
With any method, two questions arise: in which direction the compensating weight should be placed and what is its size.
Both issues are resolved purely empirically.
The location of the weight is usually determined as follows. Spin the shaft several times and notice in which position the circle stops and this place is marked. Usually the mark is placed at the bottom of the circle. This will be the hardest part of the circle. This means that the weight must be placed opposite this place.
By adding and decreasing the load (plasticine), I achieve the minimum vibration. Vibration displacement is measured with a vibrometer.
In my opinion, my method - with lids and plasticine - is better than the method with a metal disc.
To move the disc to correct the imbalance, it is necessary to unscrew the disc retaining nut each time. Retightening may cause the circle to move. In this case, the beating may appear again, which we eliminated by alignment. When using a lid with plasticine, the circle is fixed only once, and its position no longer changes, is not disturbed.
My advice is this. If you change one circle on a well-working machine, then before setting, aligning, aligning and balancing a new circle, you need to balance another, without a new circle, so that there is no mutual influence. And then set a new circle.
If you change both circles, then balance them in turn. First, just one circle, and then add another.
We eliminate, as much as possible, the imbalance with the help of plasticine. The machine will make less noise. It is no longer clear by ear whether the imbalance and vibration displacement decreases or increases when the position of the plasticine is changed. Then, if there is no vibrometer, it is necessary to apply some methods for assessing vibration displacement.
Two ways are shown. In the first method, a metal rod is taken, for example, a reamer, and one end touches the support of the electric motor or the casing of the machine. When vibration displacement is more than 80 ... 90 microns, the sweep begins to bounce, knock.
In the second method, a vibration amplifier is used, as it were, due to the resonance effect. Shown by example. I took the wire and glued it to the magnet. I installed a magnet on the casing. At the end of the wire there is a magnetic weight.
When vibration on the support is 100 µm, the vibration of the wire is about 10 ... 15 mm. When the vibration on the support is 16 µm, the vibration of the wire is 2 ... 3 mm.
The old method of using a coin does not give at all an idea of the magnitude of the vibration. And you can accurately determine the vibration using a vibrometer.
This is how I reduce the imbalance of the sharpener.
If the machine is well balanced and the circle is leveled, then it is safe and pleasant to work on such a machine. And the work turns out to be of better quality.
