The Visions of Punjab Television program began in April 1981 through the efforts of Joginder Kalsi and Iqbal Mahal on Rogers Cable in Brampton. Kalsi completed a specialized television production program at Ryerson Polytechnic and approached Iqbal to create a Punjabi program on the cable network. Iqbal helped arrange the necessary time and facilities for the program.
The program was designed to provide information on settling in a new country, community needs, and entertainment to newcomers. As the program was only in Punjabi, it generated lots of interest within our community. While we had many people available for interviews on community matters, we were in need of some entertainment.
We decided to seek out local talent as there were only a few artists from India. During our search, we discovered Bibi Balbir Kaur Ji, who participated in our shows. Rajinder Singh Aasi, who used to perform Kirtan, was also gracious enough to perform with our local artists. Additionally, Shahid Sheikh, son of the renowned Pakistani classical singer Mr. Hameed Sheikh, also participated. We are pleased to share one of Bibi Balbir Kaur Ji's Punjabi Geet recordings with you.
