Bald Eaglet Rescued from Fall & Potential Poisoning

Connick a 12-week-old bald eagle fell from his nest at Captiva Eagle Cam. CROW & SCCF were able to rescue him and he is currently being rehabilitated for rat poison and loss of primary feathers.
Updates on Connick's rehab status might be slow, but no news is good news.

Poor little Connick, this is heartbreaking ☹. I hope the little guy makes a full recovery. Poor mom and dad are worried and saddened by Connick's absence ☹. Hopefully they'll see him again. C.R.O.W staff are wonderful loving amazing people with hearts of gold who does incredible work. Thank You for the update!

Thanks Connor for the update very informative. I wish that the world would ban the use or rat poisons to protect birds and wildlife from secondary deaths due to poisons that would be a win!!! Connor, it is not the news we would have wished to hear, but Connick is in excellent hands - thank you and all those involved in taking the eaglet into care so swiftly and efficiently. You know, when you spoke of metals, the story which affected an eaglet in California (Channel Islands) sprang to mind - the fledgling was no longer capable of standing up, after flying back to his nest - in fact, in attempting to do so, he lost his balance and fell. Dr Sharpe of IWS went to rescue him and took him into the care of Ojai Raptor Centre - they found the eaglet was suffering from zinc poisoning! It was a success story - after treatment, the eaglet could be released into the wild.

Was that eaglet Victor? I seem to recall this from last season and I always wondered what happened to him as I know he was sent to the Ojai Rehab Center but l never heard anything as it was taking some time. He recall those symptoms you speak of. Just all the sudden he lost his coordination and fell out of nest, poor guy!😢 so glad Dr. Sharp was there so promptly to gather him. @@Patricia-so9rw Hi, Patricia - it was Victor indeed (by the way, I do hope his sister Lilibet is doing well, out there in the wild!) - at Ojai, he was named patient of the year! Funny that fussy Victor would not eat trout, but only white fish :) Yes, big baby was released but not back into the Channel Islands - he was released in mainland California. Having said that, he may one day visit, as young eagles seem to be hardwired to the place where they learned to fly.

I'm an avid Bald Eagle fan and watch several YT streams and saw the video that covered Connick's fall. I'm in NY but I know how excellent C.R.O.W. is due to various episodes when they were critical in intervening with the SWFL chicks of various broods (and I believe C.R.O.W. also rehabbed Ozzie in spring of 2015). Thank you so much for this video explaining what's going on with Connick's situation!

Thank you, so much for the update. I don’t have FB, so this is great. I am a victim of mercury poisoning, and have suffered for decades. It breaks my heart for this to happen. BUT Victor, from Fraser Point, last year, made a full recovery from Zinc poisoning, so I know Connick can make it through. Praying for a speedy recovery, and the day we can see him released. Hello! As far as we know he is eating well and is stable. When I talked to CROW they weren't concerned about a fracture. With a fall that high and not being able to cloat properly, the primary concern would be internal bleeding, but with plenty of IV fluids and medications, he should be fine. Give it a couple more days of treatment and he should, in theory, be in the clear.

This just happened a couple weeks ago in Massachusetts. A female bald eagle died from rat poisoning and now the male is looking for her but she won't be coming back.This is just awful. They need to stop putting rat poisoning all over the place. It's killing other birds and animals. Somebody needs to do something. It's not right.😢

I'm not sure what all tests they ran and the timelines on them, but the more complex labwork can take 7-10 days, depending on the lab. If anything of note came up from further testing, it should be in the next update. Hoping it will be beginning/middle of next week for an update.

Connick is in much better condition than this video title implies. His main problem was anemia when he first arrived, but he was otherwise in good health despite what you may think. Believe it or not, it's a great thing he fell. He would never have gotten treatment for anemia and would have kept losing primary feathers until fledging would be impossible. Thus, resulting in certain death. The major problem and what's preventing his return is actually his loss/loosening of primary feathers from the posion caused anemia. But with Vitamin K injections and fluids, they were able to flush much of the toxins out. Which is what they're currently doing still as we speak. It'll take awhile for the damage the anemia caused to reverse, but it's not actually life threatening at all. Again, the issue is flight concerns. But he's in stable condition. Unless I'm wrong and his condition changed, last I heard, his body is entirely fine and the posioning was caught early. He broke his fall thank God. This is such a huge issue. So many Bald Eagles die of lead posioning from bullets in rodents too. One of the most common causes of death is actually such. But you won't hear about it often.

This is why I feel all the chemical rat/mice poisoning should be banned. You can rid them by much safer means. Anywho who uses it should have to sit and watch while any Raptor or any other animal dies from second hand poisoning. It is gut wrenching. My prayers are with you Connick!! Stay strong!!

That English vet Dr Chris Brown did just that in a raptor once at a raptor rescue place I don't remember where it was. Maybe contact Bondi Vet and see if they can help with some information.

Hey Connor. Tysm for all the info. When Rosie fell from the US Steel bald eagle nest last year Tamarack wildlife in Pittsburgh successfully implanted donor feathers and assisted the eagles successful rehab and release. Could Connick benefit from the same treatment?

"THANK YOU" for the 'update'. Connick is ALIVE. He might not be the "alive" I imagined Connick's Life 2 be....yet....HE IS ALIVE for a reason. No speculation. Rat poison? Have you ever been to The Big Island in Hawaii? Have you ever seen The Ironman? The Beginning & The Ending of The Ironman starts & ends on a street called Ali'i Drive. Up & down the street of Ali'i Drive are restaurant after restaurant after restaurant...after.....restaurant.... I worked at one of these restaurants many years ago. This restaurant had a heck of a rat problem. BIG rats. BRAVE rats. RATS as far as you could see walking the pipes in the kitchen of this restaurant. Walking above your heads....looking down at you.....GOOD pipe walkers....actually EXCELLENT pipe walkers. Well, one day, the boss DECIDED to put rat poison out for these pipe walking RATS. Yep. It took about three (3) days.....before the SCURRYING began.......before the SQUEELING began......before the SMELL of dead RATS permeated everywhere. There were NO more rats walking the pipes anymore. Instead, some of the Rats had managed to ESCAPE the poison by traveling UPSTAIRS to the restaurant above our's. The other RATS? Well, the SMELL told you about them. Can u imagine what the Customers were "TOLD" about this SMELL? Funny...the EXCUSES one will make-up while OMITTING the TRUTH.... GOD BLESSES ALL. Footnote: If you like the smell of dead rats in the walls of your home or in the walls of your restaurants? By all means...use rat poison instead of a TRAP.

The imping of feathers are possible! They did it last year at Tamarack Wildlife Rescue, for the US Steel eaglet and she was released way ahead of schedule. Hopefully some from this Rescue that has Connick will see this and can check into it all.

Hello, sadly the entire feathers feel out of the wing/follicle. So there is no way to attach a donor feather aka imping. If the feathers were broken off or damaged, imping would be a very viable option. 😀
