Today I want to check hive number 6. It was queenless 3 weeks ago. I added 2 or 3 frames of brood in the bottom box hoping they would make their own queen and she would have a successful mating flight.
If the hive is still queenless then I will divide the two hive boxes between 2 other stronger hives and use them as supers. That is, as long as they don’t have any problems such as small hive beetles or wax moths. If the hive is now queen-right, I’ll add a super depending on their population requirements.
I was pleased to see two frames of brood in the top box. I decided to fill their internal feeder with syrup and add a super with 9 frames of foundation and 1 old frame of comb. All I had was a deep box, so it’ll have to do. I anticipate the population expanding quickly when the brood emerges. I am a little concerned about them becoming honey bound so I rearranged the frames a little so there will be space for the queen to lay.
The nectar flow is near an end and there will be a dearth soon. Since 90% of the frames in the super are just foundation, I’m not worried about the feed being used to make honey because they need to make plenty of comb, first. Also, with an anticipated population growth going into a dearth, these bees will need supplements just to survive. I am doubtful they’ll have the desire to make comb this late in the game.
But I’ve been wrong more times than right.
The other hives looked strong. There was a lot of capped honey on many of the frames. Some frames have more foundation showing than others but the bees looked strong. I added one small jar of syrup to the hive that had the least amount of comb.
