So there are "others", they are corrupted either like or worse than null and trapped within the game. They used to be players just like you and I. That crying person in the area above the main game area is likely one of those trapped.

This also doesn't explain why null is seemingly more free than the rest of them. Is he the one that corrupted them? He seemed generally reluctant to do anything in the final boss fight implying that if he did do anything to anyone it was as a last resort. Until then he's willing to let you do whatever you want right up until you cross that line.
