Jim Furyk and Matt Wolff are prime examples of what Bryson said at the start. Unconventional swings, but they were comfortable and made it work. I would bet lots of players got screwed up by coaches who tried to change their swings.

The one big caveat with the comfortable swing is the basics. As you said. Many people hate the idea of PGA professionals teaching swings because there’s so much variation… but at the roots there are things that will provide good results, and you have to hammer those basics home until they’re second nature… then get comfortable with a new swing idea to further increase accuracy/distance/whatever

Brilliant Bryson, I have been teaching for over 40 years and the one thing I emphasize with all players I try and help is the same thing.... "Finish your back swing, allow enough time to change direction, gather yourself (load-up) and then rip it.." The best example of the pause at the top of the swing is still Freddy Couples... check some vids out - you will agree..

Hey Bryson, great insight on Garret's swing. I really enjoy watching you identify issues and making the simple fixes. I am working on implementing the tip you gave to Paige win the lead elbow to the target. I suffer from snap hooks at times and that tip is helping. Going to work to implement the 'pause' at the top of the backswing too! As far as who next to give a lesson to... how about me! :-) Keep up the great content and the great play. Good luck at Augusta!

This was great advice!! My drives are HORRIBLE. I use to have a wonderful fade that was controllable before the virus a few years ago and completely lost it! I now ground it, majorly slice it, and duck hook it everytime I tee it up. There is no confidence anymore and I resort to my 4 iron which I hit very well. Anyways (lol!) I will take your advice to slow my swing up at the top (whether that is a lot or just a little) and hopefully crush it like you and Garrett! :) (I am 25 - so no excuses, I know I should be hitting it 275 with EASE!)

Bryson's golf advice is gold. A proper instructor works with the individuals body mechanics and tendencies to build a good swing, and not try to make the individual conform to what is perceived to be the "ideal swing".

100% Regular golfers don't have hundreds of hours to practicing the ideal golf swing. A lot of golfers have to work with what they got, and what is comfortable. A good coach will take a golfers natural swing, implement some adjustments, and make their contact more consistent. Unless you are truly training for a competition or something, a golf lesson is supposed to help simplify your game and make it more fun. Too many average and below-average golfers bogged down by unnecessary swing thoughts.

I went to golf tech in 2013 and spent $1100 for them to try and get me to swing like Robert Allenby and After the 6 months of lessons I quit golf for almost 2 years it got so bad!!!! The Pro wouldn't listen to me when I said I AM NOT ROBERT ALLENBY and I can not swing this way , and they told my I would never get better if I didnt get all my bad habits gone ! Well they were WRONG and I would HIGHLY RECOMMEND NOT GOING TO GOLFTECH!!!!!

Love his advice, and it’s something that my coach has preached about to me. Everyone has their own swing, and no matter how much coaching and drills you get you’ll always regress by some measure of a percent back towards your natural tendencies. During practice sessions I work on a really exaggerated in-out swing path not to actually affect the path, but because it keeps my right leg from spinning out early. Other than that, the only swing thought I ever take to the course is exactly what Bryson said early on - giving myself more time at the top. It’s amazing how the simplest things can make a difference massively.

Every video I watch of your coaching is so amazing how you help with such confidence but also with humility. When I've gotten lessons I've always gotten worse from the beginning which makes it difficult to trust the teacher. I also appreciate that you didn't say Min Woo said anything wrong, but added to his teaching with something more valuable. What a great video to watch and I will try and take a bit more time at the top as well to see how it affects my game. Thanks so much.
