What does S, S+, and RP mean?

@@matts5799 S and S+ are the ranks above A. In other words they are the best of the best. This concept of ranking things as S>A>B>C is very common in Japanese games (see Devil May Cry as a great example) and because of that it became popular among gamers in general. RP i believe simply means roleplaying, as in, these are character you might want to choose simply for roleplaying reasons because they don't have much value as far as powergaming is concerned.

Eh let's be real... he kinda is The main problem is his low wisdom which btw doesn't allow to use any magical wand, his berserker is the worst in the game where you lose control over him and it doesn't make him immune to maze/imprisonment And he's the pure ranger which is kinda mediocre class. The only reason to use him really is because he's a canon party member and his banters.

Intelligence of 9 is the only wand requirement. Mince is fun for a lot of people. He’s not optimal, but if you find him fun, go for it.

Yeah, it's sad, but unfortunately it is true. Ranger is one of the worst classes in the game, his stats are bad and he doesn't have any kind of OP item to compensate for that. His form of berserking arguably is another drawback. As someone else said, it's a shame he's not a Berserker or Barbarian. That said, you can complete the game with anyone. Want to have Minsc and Wilson in your party, go for it. I love Minsc too.

One thing I noticed is that Aerie has a lethal conflict with Korgan in Shadows of Amn, he'll insult her for being weak and decide she needs to die. But if you keep them both alive until Throne of Bhaal, he tries to bully her and she fights back and he backs off, satisfied that she finally has a spine. So their conflict is 100% limited to SoA.

It's actually the EE that gives Anomen the points in spears. In the original game he only had points in mace and sling and maybe one in hammer. They added that, because he has a banter with Yoshimo about how he saved a bunch of Radiant Heart squires by jumping on a wyvern and jamming a spear in its head. Those points were purely for RP purposes.

You’re absolutely correct. But the number of proficiency slots has always been correct, which basically means that if you were making a fighter > cleric as your protagonist, you’d have more slots to play with.

2:11:00 I don't know whether Beamdog fixed it but, back in the original BG2 there was a bug (or it might have happened only to me)that, if Jaheira is somehow killed and got resurrected, the romance stopped even if you proceed her questline. Thank you for preparing this very detailed guide, every time I watch your videos, you return me back to my college years. Trying to bang virtual chicks and being unsuccessful used to help me a lot to overcome the depression of trying to bang real chicks and being, somehow, more unsuccessful.

Great video, I've been waiting for this. These guides are unironically some of my favorite content on KZbin, the information is solid and the commentary is hilarious One thing you didn't mention: Aerie she has 16 wisdom, meaning she can reach 18 (machine of Lum the mad and ioun stone) for Wishes without potions, the only character except a custom character who can do that. I like her because of that. She does get Wish terribly late, I tend to play with smaller parties so that isn't such an issue but I suppose she's worse with your rules (I play insane SCS but without double damage and no permadeath)

I love your video. What makes Aerie OP is that you can give her the robe of Vecna and the amulet (whose name is eluding me) to quicken her spells. No other cleric can have their casting speed boosted. She is a spell slinging monster. But a very squishy one who needs constant attention. Quickened high level cleric spells are scary.

yeah. Anomen really wins out as the best companion writing wise simply because he REALLY does grow as a character. Honestly when his sister is murdered and Anomen is refusing his father's order to murder the supposed murderer is a moment that will always stand out to me. And i would say he is one of the Bhaalspawn's most loyal friends in the end, maybe after Minsk and Jaheira. (ignoring romance ofc). That said i do have a soft spot for Aerie (kinda had a crush on her as a kid^^) who just lacks the constitution to make full use of the melee monster that is the wizard/cleric. (tbh I far too often play wiz/cleric myself to take her along. Although it usually is my solo run pick, as w/c solo is nigh unstoppable)

Absolutely S+ tier guide. The only problem I see is placing Jan above Imoen. If Jan was a viable backstabber this might have made sense, but he's not. And Imoen being a primary mage just gets so much stronger later, while also being perfectly capable of handling basic thieving needs.

Jan is an incredibly good backstabber. Mislead cheese + Tenser's or shapeshifting make him incredibly deadly. On top of this, he gets regular traps and spike traps. I do think Imoen should be S, though. While most people won't, you could technically get her fairly early.

The Hexxat Shadows (I think other shadows also - if you take control of them using Viconia's Turn Undead) have a large list of mage spells at their disposal: 21-30: shadows (unlike regular shadows, these have no on-hit effect, but they can cast 5x Magic Missile, 5x Mirror Image, 2x Fireball, 1x Hold Person (wizard), 2x Lightning Bolt, 2x Dimension Door, 2x Polymorph Other, 1x Animate Dead (wizard), 1x Cloudkill, 1x Shadow Door, 1x Monster Summoning III, 1x Chaos, 1x Invisible Stalker, 1x Globe of Invulnerability and 1x Flesh to Stone.

1:43:05 - on my first playthrough, I had Aerie and although she never seemed great, I kept her along thinking she was a long term investment that would turn into a late game powerhouse, and she never did. That being said, I was (and still am) crappy at figuring out how best to use magic. I'm much better at applying buffs and easy-to-understand debuffs and then flying in and attacking with extreme prejudice, the nuances of magic such as contingencies are more advanced than that.

Tbf, the fact that Dav is running the SCS-IWD spells mod component changes things a lot. Base-game-spells only Anomen does not have the tanking capabilities mentioned in this video. Can't even protect himself from dispels. With SCS (but no IWD spells) Anomen (and Clerics in general) tend to end up as a chunky-boy :(

I just would not feel comfortable using him as a full-time tank if he didn't have the IWD spells (especially on SCS + Insane damage), which means no full invulnerability plus he's dispellable which can lead to a very quick death.

I usually play with a 5 member party just because I find it a bit more manageable, and it also lets me temporarily grab other companions to do their personal quests. I get Yoshimo before going to Spellhold, and right before we're about to be separated, I dual class him to fighter. When you have to kill him later on, having him be a level 1 fighter with no gear amuses me.

Idk, Sarevok dualed to mage (which is possible in a party of 2 or 3) wipes the floor with any NPC including ascension Mellisan. Besides deathbringer, he also has stun chance (which works on her), so improved haste + simulacrum = insta stun. Great videos btw, glad someone is still playing original BGs in a such hardcore way )

My favorite companion in the game is our guy Davaeorn here, the banter, S++, take him with me on every run, couldn't do this without him. Is able to identify all items immediately solely with his insane lore skill. His romance is continually ongoing and the best because he doesnt put out immediately after bringing him in the party; doesn't condone sleeping with recently widowed party members, A+. Has the best burns for all companions, 10/10.

Thanks mate, afer more then 20 years i finally understand why i always played on Normal Difficulty: I hated having Korgan, Jan, Anomen and Jaheira in my team bc i really dislike them. Instead i always used Minsk, Aerie, Edwin and bc i also dislike Imoen/Nalia i always played sth with Thief skills (my favorite Fighter/Mage/Thief)... NO WONDER that the Difficulty on Normal was already difficult enough for me XD

Got burned out on WoW and I come back to BG after 15 years. First playthrough as a kid back then was me going ham as paladin/cavalier. This guide is just a frickin wonderful surprise and I'm coming back to try different builds, first off fighter mage. Much love bud. Keep it up

The most weird thing I've had Neera do so far on the wild mage thing in BG1 is she turned into a wolf and just ripped through the enemies. At the end of battle she reverted and I was like "What just happened?" Edit: Neera is the only one Beamdog made extra character I ever recruit. The rest I'm just meh.

I will say I think your hate for inquisitors is a little unjustified since you modify their dispel magic to 1.5x level. You do show that being an inquisitor paladin they give up a lot, especially at later levels. To compensate for this they should absolutely nuke all Spellcaster with their dispel magic in my opinion. It should make keleborn and A companion since taking him as intended means most spellcasters are a breeze.

Bard can Remove Magic just as reliable as Inquisitor(slightly weaker than the vanilla one), and it can tank, sing, and throw Improved Haste at your fighters. It can also cast Spell Thrust or Secret Word if the caster has Spell Immunity: Abjuration, which does happen here and there in SCS. While Dispel is all the Inquisitor can do. Late in the game when Viccy or Anomen reach 30+ levels, their Dispel Magic are equally formidable and bring much more to the table. Yes Keldorn dispels at level 60 now, but the enemy level is capped around 35~40, so the excessive power of the inquisitor is wasted. Also Dav plays with Ascension and SCS. During the final battle, both Sandai and Abazigal have Spell Immunity: Abjuration. When Abazigal charges at your with Improved Haste and Black Sword of Disaster, Keldorn will melt in a split second unless you for whatever reason throw Abishai Hide, Defender of East Heaven at him.

Bard’s will only be like 4-6 levels higher than a paladin most of the game so their dispel magic won’t compare in the slightest. Sure, other spells can work on a bard but you’re comparing apples to oranges as the bard fulfills a different party role. Inquisitors are essentially a fighter that neuters their enemy. I know he plays on mods and things that add to enemy damage but this also heavily skews one’s perception on classes since it’s tailored to a different game balance. To be fair he did say on normal difficulty / an unmodded game they are probably S tier. It’s just interesting to use a mod that nerfs their core ability to essentially worthlessness then say they are not a strong class. I also use SCS but never the option to nerf the inquisitor dispel because they give up a lot to be the best when it comes to dispel magic.

I agree with you mate. It's like nerfing Edwins amulet so it adds only +1 to saving throws and saying he is weaker then Imoen because she has the same stats and in addition she is a thief...

You realize Hexxat's shadows have powerful spell lists, right? Including the ability to make even more summons that don't count toward the limit, allowing her to basically raise a small army? At level 21, Children of the Night is easily the most powerful innate character ability in the entire game. It's almost like you were so wrapped up in your grating, acerbic, relentless negativity that you didn't bother to do the basic job of fully investigating the features.

24:49 my first ever game of BG2 back in early 2000s I had my half orc warrior, Imoen, Korgan, Nalia, Anomen and Keldorn. Not knowing the outcome I went to kill the guy in his quest so Anomen became Neutral. By the time I got to Suldanessalar Keldorn said Anomen was a jerk and they killed each other in the tree so no turning back. I had to finish with 4 characters 😂 great game

I have still to watch all your video, I watched only some tiny bits of it. I am glad that you appreciate so much Anomen that used in the right way can be an outstanding front liner and tank. I partially disagree about Aerie, but it is probably due to my way to play, I don't use SCS and prefer the Tactics Mod with the old game and to play more relaxed vanilla runs with the EE game and I prefer small parties, My usual party is a 3-4 people one, if i want to go for raw power I run with 6, but play mostly with 4 dropping the other 2 at the beginning of each area and recruiting them again when I collect the quests xp reward or for the toughest battles so my main 3-4 men are over leveled. This and kicking everybody from the party but Aerie and having her and charmame, if he has some mage in his build, learning and erasing scrolls, thing that is possible even if I seldom do it, fixes completely her slow progression as multi class. End game she will still have less spell slots due to the level cap, but she can get the crucial spells almost as fast as a pure class caster in a party of 6 played the regular way. That told I don't feel that Aerie is a good tank that trades dpm for protection, she can do a lot of physical damage, like when she and her simulacrum go to battle, both welding BBoD in the main hand and FoA in the off hand, with their clerical buffs, Thac0 of a fighter, each hit does the maximum damage and 25 STR, and their arcane buffs, Improved Haste and all the protections that they may need they are quite impressive, with a total of 8 apr and if really needed a Chain Contingency that summons 3 elementals, thing that often results in summoning an Elemental Prince instead. Add a Planetar summoned by your main mage and basically you can send the little Aerie alone to the battle and watch her shred to pieces most of the tough enemies... This IMHO is awesome in a character that has a lot of utility being a good secondary mage and a cleric, not a strong cleric as Anomen or Viconia, that is sure, but she can actually protect her clerical buffs with Spell Immunity. I agree that even in the end game she has not so many spell slots so she must spare her buffs for the battles that really matter, at least if you don't have Neera in the party, then going to Watcher Keep and getting that Wish scroll can solve even that problem, at least as soon as Neera is able to cast lev 7 spells as having her Projected Image cast the Dwehomers is much better, if some bad surge happens usually it affects only the clone. I will watch all your video later, probably tomorrow, it is always a pleasure to do it and we can learn a lot about the game doing it, thank you very much!

Imoen and Nalia are the exact same thing because they were planned like that. Initially the developers planned for Imoen to die in BG2 and Nalia basically was her replacement mechanically. Because fans loved Imoen so much they decided to keep Imoen and her whole Spellhold plot.

Gotta love how BioWare hated Imoen from start to finish. They added her to fulfil the role of the thief so you don't have to force yourself to take Montaron and Xar with you in the last moment, then in enchanced edition Beamdog obviously refused to reevaluate and add up the character banter like in BG2 we have to this day so you're still reliant on the project NPC mod to fix that. And then in BG2 they did indeed decided to keep her alive but then she's left with a giant plothole of her being resurrectable as a bhaalspawn aaand didn't even give her enough of a banter to make her somewhat "as if she's there with us" (I was hoping she has some cool dialogues where if you speedrun the spellhold to get her and then do the sidequest) Aaand yea no romancing option but maybe it's understandable because it would come out as weird to date your "sister", but ye still a bit of a hit in a gut that you can't at least have some more personal banter to at least get to know her. Well there's still a mod which in my personal opinion is actually very well made (the author of this video was talking about the older version of Imoen Romance mod which made her a literal lesbian lol and ye it's terrible) if you really are into Imoen but personally i used it to get some more dialogue.

@@krunchyfrogg maybe hate was a bit too strong of a word I've used here but i am kinda sad BioWare decided to kill her off in BG2 just to be saved by the fans and then they didn't really bother to make up from BG1 and include some additional writing to make her feel like something more than another blank NPC shadowing us. But then again Nalia isn't much better so yea what did i expect.

Not sure how I feel about that change of plans. On one hand Nalia is a perfectly fine and relatively normal person who I'd like to keep around if Imoen didn't exist, and I feel like Imoen had the right mix of familiarity and innocence to turn into a tragic figure for BG2. I think if Imoen died and came back as an undead or something that would be an excellent plot twist for the final battle, but I suppose my feelings on this in the end come from my disappointment over Mellisan as a character. Just about any other character was in a better position to turn into the final battle. Imoen, Sarevok, Balthazar... they all had something personal to them, or some kind of complicated reasons for why they fight.

The very beginning of the game established for me she's going to be actually decent character akin to a deuteragonist to make up for BG1 and i hoped we might learn more about her past or get something of a big "wow" eventually.. Nice job here mate! I did LOB SCS Ascension no death two times in the past.. I'd say the top is mostly correct except that I'd move Jaheira and Haer'Dalis to A+ tier. And ofc Hexxat is S tier cos of the reasons: - she can disarm anything and not die - she can face-check almost anything and not die - traps / use any item (she literally can solo Firkrag, Kagnaxx, Demilich from WK and many more) (and yes I think to give her commands in gaseous form is too much of abuse) Overall nice nice nice content here!!!
