To people questioning why the contract wasn't fulfilled since she would respawn in hell: 1. The contract specified he had to save her. Whether or not killing her to make her respawn is the same as "saving" is a matter of semantics, contract semantics is where lawyers and devils thrive. Since she was destroyed, she wasn't saved, it's just that her death is not permanent. 2. People often think that she going back to hell is basically a teleport. It is not. The demon/devil DIES and is reborn in their HOME layer, not the layer they are currently inhabiting. This is important because of hell politics - sometimes being back at your own layer of hell is not a pleasant experience. On top of that, they can't return to the material plane for a period of time, usually 100 years and 1 day. While for a devil that's the equivalent of taking a sabbatical year, it is enough to diminish their hold onto the material plane. Any human servants/warlocks will die, plenty of others will be doing whatever they want, and other devils can swoop in and take over that power vacuum. After those 100 years they are basically starting from scratch. 3. This is more of a headcannon interpreation, but, we know from trusty sources that Mindflayers do not have souls. A lot of people forget this, but the Mindflayer is really just the adult tadpole. So the tadpole has no soul of it's own and the process of taking over the host also destroys the host's soul. Now, if they have such power, it's not farfetched to expect that one of their machine with the power to just obliterate a person's body would ALSO destroy their soul - this is specifically important since reviving creatures in DnD (specially the more powerful and dangerous one that they surely want to keep dead once killed) is not that hard as long as their soul is still kicking. Mindflayers are also REALLY intelligent, so if they put a devil in one of those pods, you can bet your ass that if enthralling or ceremorphosis weren't options, their kill method would ensure the devil wouldn't come back to bite their ass next tuesday. From that, I think Larian is implicating that this machine does straight up kills her, even in the material plane. Her soul is just gone, there is nothing to be reborn.

Ceremorphosis doesn't destroy the host soul. Once the tadpole takes over, the soul will go to the outer planes as if the host had died while the tadpole controls what is basically a heavily mutated corpse.

Their plan was to use the ensuing chaos to gather souls, but when the Netherbrain activated all of the True Souls became Mindflayers, and their souls were gone. Their whole army in the making disappeared, and their plans failed.

@@TheKmpec that’s true and I dont disagree with you. However on my first play through I wasn’t willing to let anyone die until we had gotten to the very end of the game. I wanted to see all their arcs fully play out so on future play throughs I wouldn’t feel like I’m missing anything and can have completely unique experiences aside from the ones the developers intend you to have on your first run. For example I didn’t recruit minthara as a good character even though I could have, I just killed her. I also didn’t recruit Halsin because I went into moonrise towers before figuring out how to help art cullagh so he never joined me. These are all things I’m doing now on a chaotic neutral sorlock who does both evil and good things. And it’s far more interesting this way because I let every scenario play out regardless of what happens, and I’ve come across a ton of content already that I didn’t know was in the game on my first time playing it.

Mindflayers can't do anything with souls. People keep misinterpreting what Witheres said, but he only meant that the humanoid soul is gone when the host necessarily dies during ceremorphosis, and that's why mindflayers have no souls (not "normal" ones at least). It's not some weird soul-magic, it's just death.

I think Karlach's despair about Wyll is even deeper than it seems. If you don't romance her and (spoiler) in the end Wyll goes with her back to Avernus (spoiler) she probably falls for Wyll, specially due to all that enemies to lovers theme.

Whether you romance her or not, she shows strong companionship with Wyll, likely because they were both fucked over by devils. Plus the fact that he basically risked his life by not killing her. She's also just full of love in general. All that is to say it's not deeper than it seems. It's exactly as deep as it seems. Karlach loves Wyll, whether its platonically or romantically its the same amount of love and she almost always wears her heart on her sleeve.

Mizora survived that and it did not violate the contract. When a devil dies they respawn in whatever plane of hell they belong to in this case its Avernus so technically you still rescued/saved Mizora from becoming a mind flayer there'by completing the deal.

I actually never made it this far in Wyll’s story. I didn’t really like him that much after first impressions, he died against the goblins 1st playthrough because I just wanted to watch to see how the fight would go if I didn’t interfere, I killed him when he showed up in camp 2nd time because Gith, and 3rd run I told him to get out of my camp as soon as I saw he was contracted to a devil. Honestly I don’t actually see losing him as a cost, maybe the gear I missed. But I’ve been fine without it

These illithid pods have a form of anti-magical prowess so.. by choosing to kill Mizora; you actually do achieve just that. At the cost of Wyll contract penalty sending him into the depths of Avernus, permanently bound there as a slime creature of eternal torment.

@@Yannimalgr hey yeah!. She has hold monster with an almost 100% success rate, disintegrate, and some good illusion crowd control spells like fear and stuff. She can upcast the hold monster and get three enemies with it if I remember correctly. Great character. Seemed to have very good saving throws for her concentration and a LOT of hp. Around 120 I think. Just help her during wylls quest at moonrise and then when she stays at camp. Ask her to fight on your side and she'll agree

The thing I don't get though is why Wyll gets punished for Tav's actions. Wyll isn't actively rebelling or trying to cause harm to her, Tav is. Of his/her own free will(pun intended). I'm sure the justification is that Tav is Wyll's ally, but our allies don't always do what we want. Karlach has proved that to me multiple times by stepping on plainly visible traps(that she identified) which proceeded to blow us all to hell. Plus he wasn't even there to influence the decision one way or the other. Then again she's a devil so I guess it makes sense that she intentionally keeps the terms loose so she can manipulate them to her benefit. It still seems like a loophole. Also Astarion's comment was cold lol

Wyll was so boring I clicked this without hesitation, and man was just gone. It was strangely satisfying.

Wyll's personal quest is simply disappointing. He's an amazingly charismatic companion, but the writers did him dirty. He's got basically no agency until the very end of his quest, and the quest flags are a mess. I made a deal with Mizora that if I saved her "asset", she'd break Wyll's contract. Fine and dandy. Then I get to pull her out of the pod, and AGAIN the game's like "oooh this is the time to make a bargain!". I work out *exactly* the same deal as before. She pulls the "6 more months of service!" shit. And then after all that, Mizora shows up in camp again like "you can give your soul to me forever in exchange for me saving your father, OR you can do your 6 months and I don't help you save your dad." At that point I genuinely was staring at the screen and said out loud "bitch, what?". It's unforgivable the game doesn't give you the option to reply "umh, no thanks, we'll find Wyll's dad ourselves and he'll be free in 6 months, you shove your pact up your arse". It's literally my biggest complaint about the game. Forcing you to exchange a life for 6 months off Wyll's already revoked contract. I don't understand how something like that didn't light a single lightbulb in someone's head in the writer's room to say "wait, but that doesn't make sense tho".

You actually can do both. I got Wyll out of his contract and saved his father. He's in the underwater prison and the major thing Mizora will do is send some exploding spiders after him, but if you get to him fast and protect him then you can do both.

They definitely rewrote a lot of his content part way through development. Took away a lot of his agency that was in the beta.

Yeah you can tell the writers didnt really care about wyll, I mean we dont even get to kill mizora without any consequences but we do get to kill cazador. Like come on they are both abusers but we only get to kill one. Wyll really got the same treatment Finn from star wars got
