The cape you get for being Dark Urge seems like the best choice in my opinion. It gives you invisibility for two turns when landing a killing blow. This can actually occur once per turn.

I don't know if this has been mentioned yet, but the Titanstring Bow from the Zhentaran vendor and the Club of Giant Strength from the Arcane Tower is a solid combination that you can get act 1 and use until you get the first bow in act 3 that was mentioned.

The one thing I would change, really, is that I would start as Rogue 1 to get Thieves' Tools and an extra skill proficiency from the start. I've never felt disadvantaged delaying Extra Attack by one level, and this game *really* rewards playing a skill monkey. But I also like the option of benching Astarion or fully respeccing him from the start. Edit: Reminded myself, I'm a big fan of the Cat's Grace Cloth you can get from the Highland Pass. +2 Dex, permanent Enhance Ability: Dex, resist Fall Damage, extra Jump, and I literally just have Gale or Lae'zel (as an Eldritch Knight) cast Mage Armor on me. Still ridiculously easy to hit ACs over 20 and I think that robe is the most broken clothing in the game for a Dex character.

As someone who has never played DnD or any game of this genre, this video helps a lot and im glad you go in depth witch each level and explain why you do everything at every level. Most videos I see skip to the levels that give you more feats and I dont ever know what to do in between them lol. Using this in my first solo playthrough so far it's sick, only at level 5 rn but it's been fun as hell already!

There's definitely better gear out there. Weapon: Bloodthirst Dagger. Unconditional -1 to crit threshold (dont need to be hidden or obscured). I'd rather carry a shield than dual wield melee weapons. Gloomstrand Shield gives +2 AC and +1 stealth. Sentinel Shield also gives another +3 initiative if you want even more, and lets you use the shield bash reaction. Helmet: Sarevok's Horned Helmet. Unconditional -1 to crit threshold (same as above), immunity to emotion altering conditions, +1 to con saves. Body: Elegant Studded Leather +2 to initiative, advantage on stealth checks, and once per short rest free cast of shield. Amulet: Surgeon's Subjugation Amulet is good for paralyzing an opponent on crit. Rings: A lot of good options. Fetish of Callarduran Smoothhands, Ring of Twilight, Shifting Corpus Ring, Crusher's Ring, Killer's Sweetheart, Caustic Ring, Strange Conduit Ring.

Really nicely composed build and video! I built one of my party members very similarly as a Ranger5/Rogue3/Fighter2/Druid2 and they were amazing. I took 2 levels into Druid to make use of the Sporekeeper armor you find in Act 3 which lets you cast a haste spore cloud. It offered so much more support to my party as you can ensure the entire group gets haste without lethargy (including yourself) that you can maintain full uptime on it with precise positioning. I also think the Deathstalker Mantle and the Amulet of Bhaal you get from playing as The Dark Urge is a better cape and amulet combo, but not everyone will have access to these! Using those allowed me to take the Mask of Soul Perception that gives +2 bonus to attack rolls, initiative rolls, and perception checks which were super handy. All in all, loved the guide!

I've been playing this build with a few differences: Using of two hand crossbows instead of a longbow. Pairing them with Cull the Weak with maximum illithid powers is super fun, you can absolutely clean house on the first round of combat. Namely, the Hellfire Hand Crossbow from Act 2, Yurgir drops it, and the Ne'er Misser from Act 2, from a merchant at Moonrise. Armour of Agility instead of Penumbral Armour gives 17AC, plus your full Dex modifier on top of that, doesn't impose disadvantage on stealth and adds +2 to all saving throws. I've also been using the Club of Hill Giant Strength from Act 1 in the Arcane Tower as a weapon, since I'm mostly at a range it doesn't matter and just passively sets my strength to 19. It makes getting around and staying back from melee fighters much easier. This definitely isn't the strongest this build can be, so I plan to experiment more, but those are my recommendations.

My third act gear for my ranger elf are: Sarevok's horned helmet: (ads 10ft to your darkvision, lowers your critical hit number by one, cannot be frightened or affected by other emotion altering conditions, Constitution saving throw +1) Armor of agility (very rare medium armor plus 17 armor class, full dex bonus, does not impose disadvantage on stealth checks, plus 2 to all saving throws) Cloak of the weave: (plus 1 to spell save dc's and attack rolls, absorb elements take half damage from the next elemental attack targeting you and deal additional 1d 6 damage of that element on your next attack) Disintegrating night walkers already mentioned Helldusk gloves: (plus 1 to spell save dc's and attack rolls, + 1d6 fire damage to your attacks, plus basically enhanced scorching Ray) Rings: caustic band, already mentioned, and The crushers ring (which enhances my movement by 10ft.) The surgeons subjugation amulet: (once per long rest, when scoring and critical hit on a humanoid the wearer can paralyze the target for 2 turns) Weapons: main hand: crimson mischief. Offhand: bloodthirst. Bow: Gontr Mael And he wears the Magnificently Realized Ensemble in white and purple.

in act 1 if you save the zhentarim and let them leave with their shipment you get a crossbow called Harold from their leader and it inflicts bane for 2 rounds when you hit an enemy and they fail a charisma saving throw, pretty neat if you go first and then your spellcaster can more easily hit them with their spells, good for early game aswell

Bow of banshee (inflicts fear) is OP especially with arrow of multiple targets. Suddenly every enemy is afraid and can’t move. Then combined with the boots that stack reverberation when you inflict a condition allows you to use hunters mark (a condition), fear (a condition) to stack reverberation that after two hits makes enemies take thunder damage and can make them prone. Combined with the circle that gives you arcane acuity when you inflict a condition adds your wisdom modifier to damage. Add the ring that adds 1-4 psychic damage for when you’re concentrating on a spell (hunters mark), the helldusk gloves for Fire damage, and the ring that gives you 2 acid damage, then enchant your bow with the glaive that adds elemental damage.

If you want to get 20 dex, you can get the hag hair put it into dex and use The Graceful Cloth chest piece for a +2 in dex and it also gives you +1 to dex save throws and advantage on dex save throws as well as +1.5m jump distance. This frees up the feat slot and I went with crossbow expert.

You can get +2 from the mirror and go a Gnome and there's a pair of gloves that add another +2 so can reach 24 dex

i think for equipment you are better using dark justiciar helmet, The dead shot, knife of undermountain king and ambusher. This will give you crits on 15 while obscured and ambusher gives 1-6 damage on every attack if you act first (which you usually do)

For act 1 the club of Hill Giant Strength increases the users strength to 19 combined with the Titanstring Bow which adds your strength modifier to your damage rolls is pretty good.

Always dump strength, then rush to the under dark and get the club of hill giants strength. Almost never use melee weapons anyway, so who cares if it doesn’t do a ton of damage? Then you still get a great jump distance, and can shove really well. Plus you get an additional option for a bow with the titanstring bow, that also adds your strength modifier to your damage. Pair that with the headband of intellect, can have great stats all around.

Great video and build. Another cool stealth build is 6 Shadow Monk - 3 Rogue (Thief for bonus action, but Assassin good too) - 2 Fighter (Action Surge). You get Shadow Step as a bonus action to use in addition to Misty Step from the necklace you can find. If you take tavern brawler and sharpshooter, you are really strong at both range and melee with strength potions. The bonus unarmed attack is good at finishing off low health enemies and flurry of blows is two attacks for one bonus action (costs 1 KI point). You get some of the ranger spells but can't do ensared or the extra attack at the start of combat. I am running this build on Astarion right now and it is a blast. Lots of ways to get decent AC and a ton of movement if you stay unarmored.

If action surge not that important to you, could just go 8 Monk 4 Rogue for 3 feats. Also gets you two more KI points. Some people are running 6 Monk -4 Rogue - 2 Spore druid for symbiotic entity temp hp and +1d6 necrotic dmg to all attacks. Also gets you long strider and jump as wells as guidance,etc. Can shape shift as a cat for extreme stealth which is cool. This is probably where I will end up.

@@Player_1_Gaming the stealth and mobility of shadow monk is insane. Unarmored AC is good but rarely get hit. Thinking of working in Eldritch blast for ranged option and devil's sight either with 2 levels in warlock or spell sniper feat and items. Darkness arrows are easy to get and let you save 2 ki points and keep concentration for hunters mark or hex.

The best armor for this kind of build is the Dark Justiciar Half-Plate which gives you advantage on stealth checks while obscured and advantage on constitution checks in general AND gives you a special variant of shield of faith that lasts until long rest but is a concentrated spell. Just having this on with good sneak skill and have someone cast improved invisibility on you lets you solo entire encounters without the enemy knowing what's going on around them. You find it on the ground where the spear of night is in the gauntlet of Shar.

The Dark Justiciar armor is great! I choose to give it to Shadowheart though, who was a main in my party throughout this run. This was mostly for roleplay reasons. Personally, I make some of my decisions best on story and RP and It made sense for Shadowheart to have it. Plus, I really wanted my PC to have the specific look she had too. Though for optimization purposes, yeah, the Dark Justiciar is a really good option.

graceful cloth is a really good option as well (at least for act 1) giving you +2 to dex. if you have a wizard on your team you can have them cast mage armor on them for 20 AC (with a shield)

The graceful cloth armor is what I’ve been using on my ranger5/rogue4/fighter3 since buying it from the society of brilliance lady outside of rosymorm monastery. Gives +2 to dex and advantage on dex ability checks and saving throws. Also you can min/max this even more by using dual hand crossbows and going thief subclass for an extra bonus action. This gives up to 7 attacks with dread ambush and action surge. Fighter 3 also gives you a subclass and battle master maneuvers give you extra damage and utility (tripping/frightening etc).

Trying to use this build in a solo run. The Titanstring bow from Brem in the Zhentarim Hideout is really nice for extra damage from strength. Giant strength potions are easy to come by from the hag, just stock up before killing her. This also helps you to be able to jump across the map; especially when combined with the jump spell. Boots of speed are also very very good for this build; super easy to rush this item early. Hide armor +2 from the goblin camp trader is also a nice early item; adds to initiative bonus and dex saves. Gloves of archery from the same trader as well.

Make that: 5 Gloom / 4 Assassin / 3 Champion So you will lower your Crit range even further. Get Crit gear, you can go as far as 13-20 Crit, and considering you have advantage on almost all your attacks.... let's not spoil the fun, I will calculate this at the end. :) *Helm:* "Sarevok's Horned Helmet" (-1 Crit Range) *Armor:* Without a doubt "Bhaalist Armor" Literally doubles all your outgoing damage. *Cloak:* "Shade-Slayer Cloak" (-1 Crit Range) but only while hiding (I believe it works for all attacks that turn, but not exactly sure), so "The Deathstalker Mantle" is a good alternative as well. *Bracers:* "Helldusk Gloves" for the extra damage, if it is taken "Legacy of the Masters" or "Flawed Helldusk Gloves" are good alternatives too. *Boots:* "Disintegrating Night Walkers" or "Helldusk Boots" or "Evasive Shoes" or "Boots of Persistence" all great options. *Rings and Necklace:* Depends on player, but since it is a high crit chance build, "Surgeon's Subjugation Amulet" will be useful, especially on some bosses. For rings increasing damage is possible with Psychic Damage while concentrating a spell (Hunter's Mark) and 2 Acid Damage ring. *Weapons:* 2 out of 4 options, I choose to crit ones; Bloodthirst (-1 Crit Range) / Crimson Mischief (High piercing damage doubled by Bhaalist Armor as well) / Knife of the Undermountain King (-1 Crit Range) / Sword of Life Stealing (+10 Temporary HP / +10 Necrotic Damage to enemy on every single Crit). *Ranged Weapon:* "The Dead Shot" (-1 Crit Range) That is -5 Crit Range from gear / -1 Crit Range from Champion Level 3 / -1 Crit Range from Elixir for a total of 13-20 Crit Chance = 40% chance to Crit. But; As soon as you got an ally near your target you get advantage, or if it is the first turn you get advantage.. Advantage means you will roll the dice twice, therefore that 40% chance to Crit all of a sudden becomes 64% chance to crit. Remember as soon as you are next to your enemy, you already double your damage due to Bhaalist Armor, furthermore this kind of Crit Chance, and 8 attacks on first turn before anyone can even move a muscle?

It does crazy damage with them too, unfortunately the lack of Bhaalist Armor's Aura of Murder on enemies, the double damage (Vulnerability), hurts the damage output a lot, but it still does really really good damage.

The best ring for this build I think is "THE RISKY RING" from act 2. Gives you advantage on all attacks but gives you disadvantage on any saves against you. Great for rogue/ranger sneak attacks and regular bow attacks.

There’s a set of armor you can get in act 1 to boost that Des up to 20, should you want that. It also gives you advantage on your dexterity checks - so you’re lockpicking with advantage, with all your other buffs. Also gives you a jump bonus It’s the cats grace set and you can buy it from the lone lady vendor on your way to the crèche- the one who wants a gith egg. It’s been a staple for my builds both for monk and for rogue/rangers It’s clothing, but your dex modifier gives you plenty of AC with it

That catgrace armor and the gloves of dex that the trader in the creche has plus the 17 intelligence crown from the ogre are all part of my generalist/utility builds. Add in either some hill giant gear/potion and you can spend all your ability points on wisdom, charisma, and constitution. Saving throws and skill checks for days. You end up with boss level stats, but you do give up a few item slots for it. And early game powerhouse though.

If you skip the dip into fighter, you might lose action surge but by putting two more levels into Rogue Assassin you gain more sneak attack damage.

A good start for a build but there are a few improvements to make. Skip the 5th level in rogue to grab level 3 fighter for the champion subspec and more crit. Since you can stack so much crit in this game it basically can guarantee you a crit every attack when attacking with advantage late game. The risky ring from act 2 is dps bis for that reason since it makes all your attacks have advantage throughout combat. Having disadvantage on saves does not matter if you use your bonus action to stealth as one of the races that gives you advantage on stealth. I'm all for movement speed but as a ranged build it's less important than for melee builds. Dead shot is better than Gontr Mael for damage builds no matter how cool the Gontr Mael effect is since you can have every attack be with advantage because of risky ring anyways. Slap the Gontr Mael on another class as the support weapon it is. Lastly Athlete, while being decent, is already offset by the fact that you get misty step at level 5 and get an extra cast every short rest due to the boots so going +2 dex together with the hag to reach 20 is definitely the best here. Late game you can get 22 dex so a total of +6 to hit and damage.

Yeah, these are some really good adjustments. Thanks for sharing! Going to lvl 3 in Fighter is definitely a solid option for the improved crits. Personally, I didn't pick up the Risky Ring, though I could see how it would be helpful if you went this route. Kind of the same thing with Dead Shot too. I feel like it's better only if you've really stacked the improved crits with other items/abilities, otherwise, I'd go with Gontr Mael. Both are crazy good though, I had a hard time deciding which one to use by the endgame. As far as Ethel The Hag is concerned, I killed her with no remorse 😂. Didn't learn of her +1 ability boost until later though. So I might spare her next time around. That's why I took Athlete. It didn't look like I was getting the DEX to 20 either way.

Risky Ring is a waste of a slot on this build because you get advantage on targets you move before anyway, and with 18 dex and some added initiative from gear, you always move first.

With good sleight of hand and stealth it is pretty easy to acquire giant strength potions to keep your strength at 21 or later 27 I think, so ok to dump it in char creation. Auntie Ethel restocks 3 of them any time one of your party levels up (so do them individually) and after each long rest. Just delay her quest as long as you want to stockpile potions.

not sure if its been pointed out already or not (way to many comments to read trough) but u should get the titanstring bow (finding the missing shipment and getting it to the zentarim outpost without opening it - act 1) and the club of hill giant strenght (arcane tower in the underdark - act 1) .... thats the best dmg combo u can get and also u get to put the points from Str into something else since the club will set u're Str to 19 also u should consider The Graceful Cloth (from Lady Ester in Mountain Pass - act 1.5) this gets u to 20 Dex (17 base + hag hair + this armor), more jumping distance(and combined with the Str u get with the club u can drop Athlete feat for something else) and also gives u advantage on Sleight of Hand rolls (aka u roll 2 dice instead of one so u can steal pretty much anything during the entire game)

Thanks for sharing! Yeah, I got the Titanstring Bow. Ultimately didn't use it too much because my lower STR but yeah if you used it in conjunction with potions/items that would a strong combo. With the DEX score, I actually killed the hag in this playthrough so I didn't get the hag hair. I tried to not make a build guide dependent on items but yes, anyone who can get their DEX score to 20 should absolutely do the ASI over Athlete.

i know this video is 3 months old, but you can use the heavy armor proficiency in ranger armor to get heavy helmets, boots and gloves with very strong passives, as long you dont wear heavy chest armor, you wont get the penalty in stealth

There is an illithid power that lets you use bonus actions as actions so going thief rogue which gives you two bonus actions is actually 2 more attacks each with extra attack. So hasted and with bloodlust that's an arrow from dread ambush, another 2 shots from your regular action and extra attack, another 2 shots from hasted, another 4 shots from your bonus actions, and then another 2 from bloodlust. Now you action surge to get another action so 2 more shots...so that's 13 arrow opening turn. Add special arrows and sneak attack as needed.

I'm surprised you didn't recommend Deep Gnome for this build. It's perfect. Stone Camouflage and Superior Dark vision are obvious benefits. Gnome cunning can help overcome the loss of INT and CHA scores as well

Great astarion build! But, I chose different equipment. I chose the Marksmanship hat for +1 range attack (I just started in the lower city), I gave him the Death stalker mantle (Dark urge reward) which is CRAZY good as I go invisible after every kill, I then gave him Yuan-ti scale mail which is AC 15, +1 Intiative and grants full dex mods with no penalty to stealth, I gave him the ring of free action but really haven't found good boots yet, and lastly I gave him the surgeon subjugation amulet which paralyses on crits for 2 turns once per long rest. My bow is joltshooter but I am gonna go find Dead shot. I just turn off armor and keep with his normal look. He is my MVP So thank you!

Diving back into this to play classes and stuff I haven't before; Like the build so far; I didn't follow it exactly stat-wise and enhanced leap. Misty Step is such a good spell that I felt enhanced leap was a waste. Usually I am level 5 by the time I get to the goblins in Act 1; it's not too bad of a hurt to wait in my opinion.

Fun addition that im pretty sure the video doesnt go into, if you give your gloom stalker assasin all the parasites (i do this build with my main character) and get the bonus of each time you lower an enemies hit points below your number of evolved ilithid powers and end up also taking the emperors parasite you can get to a point where lowering an enemy below 20+ hit points insta kills them, super helpful when you have this many attacks, cleared most of the creche before they could even attack

I honestly find the find familiar in bg3 to be virtually useless so i opt for one of the elemental resistances instead, my first ranger build attempt in bg3 was beast master and my familiar almost never survived the first turn of combat and i found next to no out of combat utility for them.

Presently I m doing a stealthy Monk with momentum gear, I'm still very early game and I'm cutting my teeth on Story Mode, but Monk was the least interesting class for me, so that's why I chose it, to challenge myself with something outside of my comfort zone. I only wish there was a transmog system, as early game doesn't have much variation with "clothing" items.

I really liked this video, but I feel like I should point out that, when you say that you are probably better off saving sharpshooter for when you are able to take advantage of assassin perks, you aren't necessarily right. with a longbow and archery fighting style against an enemy with 12 ac you average 8.77 dpr with dex 20, whereas you would do 11.33 dpr with sharpshooter and 18 dex. at ac 16 your dpr is 6.4 with dex 20 and 7.63 with sharpshooter. asi only beats out sharpshooter at ac 20, and only by 0.13 damage

Uncanny dodge in 5e SHOULD be a reaction ability, in BG3 it only works on the first hit if you have it toggled on. They should've made it a pop up so you chose when to use it was you would make the choice after getting hit. The risky ring and killer's sweetheart would pay dividends in this build as well I think.

I'm working on a variation of this build where the character can do melee or ranged and I am thinking about picking up great weapons master since it says you can make an extra attack anytime you kill something or crit. Swords bard/fighter/rogue has a crap ton of attacks. At level 6 as just a swords bard you can attack 4-5 times a round without haste. Add haste and action surge and it’s 8 I think?

There is another option here: Fighter 4 and Rogue 3. You miss out on the extra Sneak Attack damage and Uncanny Dodge, which is unfortunate since the Sneak Attack dice is doubled on a crit. However, you get a Fighter subclass and more HP and still get an ASI. The obvious choice is Battlemaster for the extra d8 dice you can get on Manoeuvres and the optional choice for Precision Attack to help mitigate the penalties you have on Sharpshooter. Alternatively, go Champion and stack all the crit-effect items you find in the game that lowers the crit threshold for lots of crits. Overall, Battlemaster is better since this is a Nova build and you want to eliminate as many threats as possible. Battlemaster also gives you the option Pushing Attack that can be useful to one-shot a creature into a death-pit, and strangely like 50% of the boss fights seem to have one.

Yeah, that's a good option too. I personally wouldn't go Fighter 4 but I think skipping Uncanny Dodge and going Fighter 3 for the subclass is great. I've tried it with Champion and the critting is insane. I'll have to try Battle Master sometime.

This is the build I'm doing - though I'm going less optimized and more well-rounded. I did 12-17-14-10-13-10 for starting ability scores. I chose High Elf for the species - Wood Elf is better for the movement and the stealth skill but I wanted the perception skill, and a free wizard cantrip. I also started with Fighter because I wanted Con proficiency and heavy armor (I'm not doing as much stealth infiltration so the stealth while necessary for some cases hasn't been 100% needed versus having a 22 AC now at level 8). Then I got the action surge, then I did 2 levels of Rogue for the skills and expertise and then I went Ranger. I took Wasteland survivor for the fire resistance over the find familiar cantrip. I also found that I wanted the Rogue Expertise and skill at level 3 because that's when I started opening chests and talking to people and in general using more skills. I also plan to do 7 Gloomstalker, 3 Assassin, 2 Fighter. The 7th level Gloomstalker gets Wisdom and Intelligence saving throws which I find is incredibly important. Granted this means I only get the one feat - Probably should have gone for Sharpshooter but I went for Alertness. I might respec that with Withers now that I think about it.

Interesting. I came up with a similar build before I started looking for builds. However, I chose half-orc (extra damage on crits) and level 7 Rogue rather than getting Fighter because the extra damage dice seemed more consistent than the more situational action surge. I also started as Rogue to get the extra skill.
