About being horny: doesn't happen to me that much, Lae'zel has obviously a special...culture, ShadowHeart is very very judgmental, you have to act "good" same with Astarion but with "bad"...Gale appreciate you if you participate in conversations with him often.., Halsin focused on goals... ... really didn't get the same impression you did.

@@ChristmasLore Yeah, this also hasn't happened to me, at least not yet. But I note that FG's PC in this footage is... a bard... so I'm sus. Not of him. Of Larian. I wouldn't be entirely surprised if Larian *literally* made this happen on purpose *specifically* when the player character starts as a bard. After the bear scene, I assume nothing!!! There are no lengths they will not go to in order to make D&D jokes! 😂

I adore this game completely. That said, I don't think they should limit save scumming. It's not their job or our job to tell other people how to enjoy an RPG. Where would they draw the line? How would they enforce it? Why should they enforce it? We all draw that line in a different place in our own playthroughs, and the system shouldn't be changed because some people think other people are doing it wrong. Deciding your level of consequence is part of the experience. I see where you are coming from; some of my best tabletop D&D moments have been when my ranger accidentally shoots herself in the foot and fails to prevent the human sacrifice or whatever, but it isn't my job to tell people to take that journey that way. They'll come to it when they are ready.

I'm late, but I agree 100%!!! I love rolling with the consequences, but sometimes an outcome is entirely unexpected in a way that isn't fun. I've "save-scummed" once and it was when I wanted to test out pick-pocketing, uselessly pick-pocketed Astarion, and then was forced to kill him because there wasn't another way (I could see) to get out of the situation. I wasn't aware how the mechanics worked or that an NPC would immediately know you had stolen, something that isn't my fault, but was an unexpected mechanical choice. Long story short - BG3 is a LONG investment, and if something in the story hits wrong and is disappointing in a way that destroys the fun, I see no harm in someone wanting a better outcome. Doesn't affect my playthrough one bit

@@dctrbrass Yeah, if it is competitive play, then adherence to a set of rules should be strictly monitored and exploits stamped out. That Speak with Dead moment with the guy from the fire is one that stands out in my mind as well. I usually do a lot of head-canon role playing in these kinds of games and I thought it would be a nice gesture to feel like I gave this poor guy a little closure with one last chance to speak with his wife. I was pleasantly surprised when the game actually reacted to that choice in an appropriate way. This game is so deep it's almost unbelievable.

Making skill checks harder also makes you think about who you bring in your party. In table top D&D the players often talk before the first game to make sure you have someone skilled at healing, utility, social skills ext…. This game has the same thing when picking companions. If you don’t make a trap/lock door expert you are going to take astarian in your party or suffer the consequences for not having that skill set.

It drives me nuts when people complain about saves scumming so much. Do it if you want, if you don't; don't do it. Why make it an issue if it doesn't affect other people playing their own game. The devs have so much on their plate to worry about then a function that can be ignored if you don't want to do it.

I think some of the horniness can be explained by the tadpole giving you a mental connection and it being a high stakes life or death end of the world situation. Everyone is staring death in the face and doesn't want to waste any time, plus you’ve got this unusual level of intimacy going on.

@@DarkScreamGames it still feels way, way too groomer, especially for early teens getting into the genre. Clearly deliberate. Plus, hinting is much more exciting with anticipation rather than all the blatant homoerotica which is more transactional (but admittedly close to the real life scene). Again, children should not be exposed to this - they can make their own choices later, but let the kids be heroes first. We don't have constant dialog about characters getting hungry (eating is a mechanic in camp) or needing to visit the bathroom. Sure, have romance as a *option* for those that wish to play a secksim (although there are plenty on Steam if that's yer bag), but some of the dialogs its tedious work to find the option where you are not getting the wrong kind of 'bodycount'. Grooming children is never acceptable (although an explicit goal of the founders of Post Modernism, if one wishes to check) and Larian should step back over the line of decency on this. it's best to keep propaganda/activism out of entertainment, no matter how justified the developers feel. Anything close to grooming (sexual indoctrination) of children is beyond the pale for decent people, even if it is a game

I disagree with the save spam, if you don’t like using it then don’t but personally, I wouldn’t even play if I couldn’t go back when I seriously mess up. Especially with the complexity of the relationships and the choices of dialogues. Not only do I love to see other answers, but it’s very easy to accidentally choose something that sets your relationship back.. I wouldn’t be able to make a choice if I couldn’t go back. I think that having the option is great and if someone doesn’t want to use it then just don’t… and the point about the se**al aspect of the companions is also something I have to disagree with. I mean, have you played Dnd?! 😅 it’s pretty much right there all the time! And I sorry but if you can have gory scene like the ones with the Dark Urge, I really don’t see why having some horny companions is such a bad thing. At this point it’s just fun and the funniest lines were some of those! That’s just my opinion though. I wouldn’t change anything to the game!

My computer just finished downloading the GOG offline installer, and now it is going through the long and slow process of installing this massive game. Provided that the new version is working properly (I run Linux, and it can be a little picky), I have a feeling that I will be mired in character creation this evening. I am looking forward to it. The graphics card is fine since I have no interest in going to higher resolution than 1920x1080 and I'm a cheapskate (I would rather spend my money on booze than computers), but I plan to upgrade the processor, mother board, and RAM before long, and I'll add an SSD while I'm at it. Save scumming isnt forced on the player. Its tempting but its their journey and the end goal is to have fun so let each player go about it the way they decide. Personally, I try to avoid the temptation to reload after an unfortunate roll and only very occasionally will give in to temptation if im just too connected to a character or thing to allow it to be gone due to a simple unlucky roll but like i said, thats rare that i try to disrupt fate because losing something precious really can lead to cathardic momemts or even stronger emotions later. Either way, do what makes it most fun for you personally.

its surreal, even considered as an immersive sim. BG3 offered dynamic narrative and reactivity, the writing for the game gave the illusion of players choice, made predetermined by the devs based on level design, tools, environmental interactions, and emotional capacity for player agency that kept the game engaging and immersive. legit GOTY when it boils down to when games are all about escapism, and that's players freedom.

You did an awesome job of explaining how everything works. I'm glad this is going to be great for the people that have the time and patience to enjoy this kind of experience. I'll probably buy it just to see how it feels, but I know I don't think I'll make it through more than ten hours of listening to stories unless the co-op works really well.

Seriously man idk who you heard say this, and how it’s such a common opinion in your circle that you think “most people” think that.

Nice review. I just hope Larian did a better job with BG3 difficulty levels than they did with DOS2. I'm saying this as a turn based games veteran player. I quit DOS2 several times because I always fall from "annoyingly difficult and unfair" to "too easy and boring" just by turning down a single level. I know how to play the game, I just don't wanna spend 45 minutes in every fight. I wish there was a middle ground. Owlcat Games did a fantastic job in this department with Pathfinder: WotR, where you can tweak and customize many aspects of the game.

It's just so dense.... Mind bogglingly so. I spent ages in the goblin camp doing the following...rescuing a bard, getting kinky with a pain worshiper, tamed some spiders, psychically manipulated a hobgoblin practicing necromancy, got thrown in jail and fought my way out with the help of a shapeshifter, bribed an ogre to go to a weird temple where I solved a puzzle which opened a door...which lead to a ladder.... Which was so long in had a cutscene and now I'm in a massive underground area reminiscent of the one in Elden Ring. I just can't.... Wow.

There have been a few bugs , but none have been show stoppers. Just a few mesh glitches, an occasional weird pause during enemy moves in fights and a couple of minor "This should work but it doesnt" things. Re turn based, I think pillars of eternity is what made me a fan of it, but I was already kind of fond of it since the original XCom

One of the funniest moments for me was redoing the ruin by the shore. I've done it a bunch of different ways in early access but decided to try a new method out of curiosity. Shot the dangling stone work to collapse the ceiling of the temple then fell in it. Enemy got a surround round on my team and lit us up with fire arrow aoe, when retaliating I noticed the explosive barrel in the middle of the group, quickly set it off with a fire spell and killed all but their archer. She ran down the hall, opened a door and yelled at the guard stations by the main entrance who spent his turn dashing towards the door, stopping just before the entrance. Counter sniped the archer and then a thought came to me as I noticed the lever for the door she just used. What if I hit it? Had my charter fire a cross bow bolt at it and sure enough the door closed on the guard. He spent his turn opening it but not rushing in, my team was hidden. I spent my turn shooting it to close the door again. I played 4 rounds of ding dong ditch messing with the guy while my team starting to pile bodies atop each other in the center of the hallway like some sort of demonic sacrifice pyre. Finally let the poor guy in only for my stealth team to opportunity attack him to death as he finally entered. The variation of tactics for the same fight is incredible. I've done this fight 4-5 different ways but that was the most fun yet.

My only complaint with the game is that I wish they had voiced acted the main character as well. I can understand why they didn't given the significant amount of extra work this would have required, but it really would have taken the game to the next level. It just feels "off" in-game to have your characters basically just awkwardly emote his way through conversion while all the NPCs have great voice acting and what often looks to be motion captured animations. In Mass Effect, for example, Shepard's delivery was often the best part of the game, despite the often poor animations. Maybe something for BG4 and/or an Enhanced Edition down the line. :)

I don't think the romance dialogue options are working as intended because they work even with neutral and low affinity. I also think it's something not working right with affinity because companions are sharing their backstories regardless if they like me or not. However this is the only real problem i have with the game. Otherwise it's such an amazing game.

Your piece on save scumming makes sense until you realize not everyone wants what you want. Some people only want one play through, and they want to see every option on the way through. If you don’t want to save scum then don’t, but don’t fuck it up for people who don’t necessarily want to play the way you do. Usually there is a save penalty on the harder difficulties, I haven’t checked out tactician though

You're missing the point, failing rolls can lead to interesting outcomes that you will always miss by savescumming. You're reducing the originality of your own playthrough by doing it because now you have the same story than most people at the water-cooler, instead of your own personal adventure.

The only thing to make this the ultimate RPG for decades to come, is to make a NWN style game maker tool. That game is one of the best of all time because of all the games people made for years afterward using the tools it offered. Hopefully Larian knows about NWN and are going in that ultimate direction for an expansion.

I'm unsure I'll play BG3 as a big fan of the old BG games because the title itself carries expectations that I think will be unmet. I don't think "it's kind of the best version of most of these" is quite right, not because I think BG3 is a "bad game" as I don't think I'm currently able to have that opinion in good faith because I haven't played BG3, but I think it's more "different strokes for different folks". My hunch is that the older games are less about nailing the D&D system (2E back then) and balance of the game and are more in favor of variety and immersion compared to BG3, but I don't know for sure, just speculation.

I never in a thousand years thought I'd be into these high fantasy games. The likes of Skyrim, Elden Ring, etc. just never really attracted me. But... I'm really loving that I can play this game how I want to play versus being stuck on a track. I love that I can be a nice person who saves the world through friendship and only resorts to violence as a absolutely last measure, and the game rewards me accordingly. This would basically be "hardmode" or a gimmick in another game. It's been so long since I had a game that could "take me away" in the way this game does. I truly feel like it's engaging me cognitively, emotionally, and sometimes physically because some fights are so stressful that I'm sweating LOL. But man. I forgot what it was like to play a truly high quality game where I didn't have to gaslight myself into enjoying it.

I really hope that Bethesda (for TESVI) and BioWare (for Dragon Age: Dreadwolf) take notes here and build games that are as deep and fulfilling as Baldurs Gate 3. The reviewer hit the nail on the head: I've been waiting for a game like this since Dragon Age: Origins (although Skyrim was very good too) and I want more like it. It makes me remember why RPGs are my favorite genre.

I disagree wholely on the save scumming bit....Larion and all game devs are aware of this and I believe that it should be up to the player as to whether or not they do it. I heard your argument about it....and trusting the dice....and although I tend to agree with that ....I think player agency is paramount. If they want to save before a dice roll...then they are well within their right to do so. Every playthrough is different, so they may start out save scumming at first...but then play again and choose not to do it at all.
