Real Crusades History

Жыл бұрын

Baldwin IV, Leper and crusader, was one of the outstanding commanders of his age, and during his life, posed a worthy challenge to the valorous Sultan Saladin. In this titanic struggle, Saladin had considerable advantage - he controlled the territory around Baldwin’s tiny kingdom, and he had far larger armies at his disposal. What’s more, the young King also suffered from a grave illness - leprosy. Despite his disease, and despite the fewness of his men, Baldwin the Leper rode at the head of his knights, sword in hand, battling Saladin’s legions on more than one occasion. Today, we’ll delve into the life, struggles, victories and defeats of this truly remarkable youth. This is Real Crusades History - the life of King Baldwin IV, the Leper King of Jerusalem.

“When I was sixteen I won a great victory. I felt in that moment that I should live to be one hundred, now I know I shall not see thirty. None of us know our end really, or what hand will guide us there. A King may move a man, a father may claim a son. That man can also move himself. And only then does that man truly begin his own game. Remember that howsoever you are played, or by whom, your soul is in your keeping alone. Even though those who presume to play you be kings or men of power. When you stand before God, you cannot say "but I was told by others to do thus" or that "virtue was not convenient at the time." This will not suffice. Remember that.”

@@dre6289 Honestly, I think he could have been an even greater man. His mentor William of Tyre always spoke highly of him (and expressed great regret that Baldwin got leprosy). Baldwin was one of the more well-read kings at the time, was astute, kindhearted, and was well-liked as a child by all. He just had a natural charisma about him. The leprosy forced him to expedite his rule and forced him to look for successors, so he never really got a chance to truly live the life he should have. But being out on the battlefield with his men probably made him feel like his life was worth living.

@@celuiquipeut6527 I didn't disagree or dispute that he wouldn't be the same man, simply that he would have been an even greater man without the illness given how much he was able to accomplish while sick. From a moral standpoint, I believe the illness made him stronger in his beliefs and faith because every day could have been his last, but had he not had the illness, I think he'd have been able to accomplish much more in his life and would have probably been able to rally even more Christians to rally to Jerusalem's aid had he been healthy. His illness unfortunately altered his trajectory in life and made some people look down him as an inferior man. It was God's will and no one can dispute that, but I think given his moral character, he still would have eventually ended up reaching the level of renown. He was just that good of a man.

The problem with the Crusader States is that they could never get a large number of Europeans to come and populate their kingdoms so they were always short of men and funds. Saladin was later defeated by Richard the Lionheart, who probably was the best fighter of his time, like a medieval Achilles. Saladin was afraid of Richard and his soldiers too, often refusing to engage. King Baldwin IV did not deserve to be called or to be remembered as the "Leper King", it's disrespectful. His capabilities and accomplishments as a king should not be overshadowed by this illness. He was a king, like the rest of the great kings who lived before, during, and after his time. People must focus on his achievements, strength and bravery as a knight of the cross instead of what killed him. King Baldwin IV must be remembered as the defender of his beloved Jerusalem, a king who loved his people, a king who did not assume to be above God. He did incredibly well for a very little amount of time, but he left a legacy in the history of mankind that'll last for a lifetime. Baldwin IV was the king of the Crusader Kingdom of Jerusalem.

Wow! As I just saw an interesting short on Baldwin and Saladin, I typed the names into the search bar. Baldwin had no feeling in his arm due to his disease and controlled his horses with his knees - which is astounding and no small feat in war! I'm going to make coffee, charge up the tablet and sit back and enjoy this documentary! Thank you for the upload!

both baldwin and saladin were shrewd and capable leaders. dedicated to their creeds and the spirit of their laws. regardless of their temporal statuses. I also appreciate how you gave Guy some of the due that is warrented. There were definite things to criticize about him, but his campaign strategy wasnt one that was necessarily poor.

@@Snow-pi7cd I don’t think you understand lol. Saladin and Christian Crusaders would’ve had a cooperative, if not peaceful relationship if the actions Guy de Lusignan and Renald de Chattaillon hadn’t provoked a war between Jerusalem and the Ayyubids. If Baldwin had at least produced a legitimate heir, Guy would never have been made king.

@@Snow-pi7cd that’s true, but Baldwin didn’t prosecute a war like Richard did. Baldwin fought a couple of battles on his own territory. It’s the fact that a 16 year old boy with leprosy routed an enemy army is what made him badass.

Very interesting to get an alternate view point on the politics that played out between Raymond III's faction and Guy's faction. I'd always heard the more common variant. Particularly it was interesting to here a more favorable view of the Reginald "the wolf" of Kerak. I knew Kingdom of Heaven's rendition was largely bunk, but there were perspectives here I hadn't considered. On a side note, have you ever read Harold Lamb's Iron Men and Saints? if so what is your opinion of the book?
@mojus2890

I was really excited to learn kingdom of heaven existed then I've gotten progressively more and more disappointed as I read and hear comments about it. I mean, the commenters were praising Saladin as a man who cared deeply for his men. None of his men would've agreed with this statement after his fighting with Richard the lionheart.

I like to imagine him watching our time from the spirit world. He probably wishes he could have received modern treatment for his illness but more importantly would love to have had today's weaponry.
