May i explain what vitally eat the first dish in the banana leaves is called pepes cumi and you have to eat it with rice, it will taste more delicious and what jean eat after in the banana leaves also, we called it botok (same pronounciation with the word botox)...both foods must be eaten with rice, if not you will taste it too salty and spicy. The bakwan is vegetables fritter, made of flour, salt, cabbage and carrot.

ooh thank you for the explanations, so kind of you! now we know 😍👍 yeah i cd tell we definitely needed rice for the pepes and botok but actually i can understand that with rice they'll be really delicious just from tasting them. Was awesome!

Hi Jean, Kerak Telor is a traditional Betawi (one of the tribes in Indonesia) food, this food is rarely found now. This food is usually sold in the capital city of Jakarta because the Betawi tribe comes from that area. Food like that you find it in bali, that's very impressive.

I did this too in Thailand, squatting at the minimart while having meal, this is adventurous. I never heard of es oyen, what creature is that, blimey, you should have released this vid when fasting was still ongoing, so i could have hunted it out ..... what if it's up for grabs only during fasting month, it means i hav to wait for a year ahead ....... 😥 and the kerak telor looks appetizing ...... 🤤 No idea in english, sound strange to call it egg crust ..... another name for klepon i often hear is onde-onde ........ Rumor has it that western people have no idea how the brown sugar can get inside in the first place ..... 😁 I m wondering if some of them are still wondering to this day .....
@JeanVoronkova2 жыл бұрын
yeah sorry for the late release Franklin... we shot it in time before hari raya.. but then you know we move at turtle speed (slow living in Bali haaa) so it takes days to edit heehee... sorry man hope the kerak telor guy still hangs around for next ramadan! hahaha i bet they inject the brown sugar into the klepon like you do cream puffs? Or perhaps it was a solid piece of brown sugar that somehow melts??? Oh man now you have me wondering!!!

Hi Jean & Vitaly! You guys are just so entertaining. I think they way you describe & eat, makes the food nicer than it is! Many new things I've not eaten or seen. The kolak durian sure looks very tempting. I would love to try it! The expression & sound at 12:23 is just priceless.. And V's 1st reaction eating it, I thought he didn't like it. Haha.. Anyway I had a great great laugh at your expense too! From a high flying corporate lawyer to sitting at the steps of a minimart eating. But don't get me wrong! It was not in a bad way. I just thought how down to earth and genuine you guys are. No snobbish pretense at all, but enjoying the food so much sitting at the steps. You guys are definitely my kind of people! Won't hesitate to sit there with you if I'm there too! (Actually I ate a great many Cornettos at many minimarts sitting at the steps just like you)
@JeanVoronkova2 жыл бұрын
heya terubong! your msgs always cheer me up thanks so much! this pasar outing yielded some unusual finds like the kolak and the kherak telor yeah! the kolak is damn yummy - even nicer than the bubur aneka that we tried at the morning market the last time around in taman griya so that was unexpected - maybe its the durian factor but it really was sweet and gummy and awesome comfort food. haha the kherak telor is an experience man... have u had it before somehow? yeah actually at first bite when i was recording V eating i was like "uh oh... that looks bad! haha!" but it turns out he just was SUPER puzzled by the shrimpy taste... n it took us forever to realise that the kherak telor actually had glutinous rice at the base... we only saw it in the bright lights of the minimart LOL.... its just a very unique combination of flavours and smells. I'm a sweet foods person so it's not my fav but i'm really glad we tried it! that was my food adventurer moment haha. Similar to how i ate grey bread in Ethiopia..... with like chilli fried meat... that was another very strange memory haha! But yeah, i was actually v happy sitting outside that minimart. It somehow reminded me of home. I felt very "in Asia" being Asian, and very comfortable in my skin. it's a 小幸福 to be able to do that. Sit on steps and maybe eat ice cream from the minimart haha, just like u and the cornettos! I haven't done that since my age turned double digits i guess. Even in SG since the 1990s doing that just wasn't "fashionable" haha
@terubong2 жыл бұрын
@@JeanVoronkova I didn't know I'm able to always cheer you up but I'm glad! No I haven't tried kerak telor before, its interesting though. Like you I'm more of sweet food person and I don't take seafood either. So the shrimpy taste is definitely not for me. I"ll have the kolak anytime. Two in fact. Haha.. You 2 are much more adventurous with food than me I gotta say. Well its not just you being Asian looking happy sitting at the steps. V looks totally comfortable and happy like a kid too! at 11:44 I was laughing at you both. Not in any bad way of course. Looking forward to your next video. I always watch but sometimes I don't comment straight away. I went to bed after watching and dreaming of yummy food.

haha yes you definitely do! It's very inspiring to read what you got up to and how things were different back in the years when you were here exploring. Aiya i didn't know till now you don't take seafood. You can skip this saturday's video then haha - or at least the first half of it - cos its about Jimbaran seafood - but then there's some durian desserts at the end at this new cafe we discovered in this area some time back. I really like the couple that runs the place. Can feel they're good nice people, n i think the cafe is very well done. You won't see it in the video, but they actually serve up a great lontong.

@@JeanVoronkova Oh no... I'll be watching. I don't eat seafood but I love looking at seafood. Fish markets are favourites. Everytime I visit supermarket I'll also purposely browse the fish section. Used to go fishing too! And still watching fishing videos. Looking forward to see your Jimbaran videos. Ate there at the early early days. The Singapore Airlines country manager brought me there. 3 of us had a huge spread of seafood and other dishes plus drinks. I remembered 50k back then. The food looks ah-mazing!! Reminds me of Malaysian Street food (I was born in Malaysia)! Though I have a question, as someone who lives in a western country (I currently live in Melbourne, Australia), is there any issues with potential food poisoning? I've always loved street food but have gotten food poisoning so many times so I try to stick to more 'westernised' and 'tourist' restaurants and cafes, but the local food at street markets look soo good (brings back childhood memories)! I'm coming to Bali in November to suss out what it's like living there long term (I've visited before and loved it!) Next year I want to come live there for a few months and a few years if I can! Binge watching all your amazing videos btw!!

Even tho.. Bali is actually NOT the place for halal foods ! It's just bunch of muslim people moves to Bali & try their luck.. Also all the foods you ate are NOT Bali's foods.. BUT ! Since it's in Bali street, so yeah it's still Valid. 😁
