For those who still being confused of balinese gamelan, better if you listen carefully all the instrument, not only judging one by one because they play all the instruments to be one music. This is what balinese gamelan be like. Sometime can be very fast sometime can be very slow. Very different from javanese and sundanese, but this what make balinese gamelan sounds so unique and special. And FYI the music that played has it's own story. Sorry for my bad english. Hope you guys understand.

I read it is also typical for the Balinese gamelan to have the different instruments tuned slightly apart, producing the acoustic beat (the shimmering vibrato effect).

The main difference that I know of is tuning. Balinese gamelan instruments are in pairs that are *slightly* out of tune with one another, which creates a "shimmery" sort of pulsating effect when the pairs are played simultaneously. Hope that helps somewhat!

They are each playing in a different octave. Western music is playing with whole and half notes (the white an black keys on a piano comes to mind), while eastern music plays on quarter, eight. . .and even 32 notes. This very complex and sophisticated system gives it that slithering sounding quality. We Westerners can hear it in the slide guitar of country western music in the US.

I really love how all that percussive repetition actually creates a tone like a stringed instrument, and that's one of the reasons that makes Gamelan unique in Asian percussion music.

IMO it has to do with the origins of eastern music and how they differ from western musical cultures. Many eastern musical traditions tend to focus much more on the rhythmic aspect of the music rather than the melodic aspect. The stories that I have been told have been that this tradition goes back to eastern agricultural culture, where music was played as people transplanted rice in the paddies. The rhythms supposedly allowed the workers to work more efficiently, so bands were placed within hearing distance of each farmer. When it comes to memorizing the notes, it is muscle memory. Once you have the basic mechanics of the instrument down, it becomes surprisingly easy to memorize complex patterns. The difficulty in performance comes because the ensemble is led by a single player, who will tend to vary the speed of each pattern and the number of repetitions of the pattern. The performance comes down to adjusting your muscle memory to fit the patterns laid down by the ensemble leader. Source: Eastern musical cultures is something I explored during college, purely from a recreational point of view. I find music and foreign cultures interesting, so I filled most of my electives with foreign music courses.

Leo Freeman Each member of the orchestra learns a set of patterns. With the keyed instruments like the Gender and the Slenthem each key has a number and one simply memorizes the patterns. With the Tombon or Bonang it's all rythmic. The patterns are usually conveyed orally, but I've seen modern composers write some of the stuff down. Conducting is very similar to a jazz ensemble: the leader uses non-verbal clues to determine tempo and sometimes key changes.

The individual instruments remind me of thumb piano or high pitched marimba, but the way they all meld together as a group is something special. It is like a sitar, but instead of sympathetic strings adding drone, every single note is purposely made by a person. Ignoring all of that, the music itself sounds like something from a fever dream. The kind of thing you would hear if you met a deity in your sleep.

I get the rich melodic sense of the piece. It's the (seeming) lack of time signature and how they know when and how to play in unison. The man keeps some beat, but he's not always keeping time.The player on the top left is the one who evinces a sense of rhythm and being really connected to the music. Some of the players seem to be just playing it by rote, like the guy in back of him.
@glassarthouse
@glassarthouse 8 жыл бұрын
+corinne54 the time is coming from the mid-harmonies of the percussion strung together. YOu don't listen to the banging for the time you listen to the smooth harmony that is created by all those gamelan beats and you flow with that. They have a different sense of musical time in this sense. The reason, IMO, that they are able to keep it all strung together is because they are not listening to the pacing mallet to keep time. They are listening for the tone caused by all the percussion. I could e wrong. I certainly don't have that skill!

Many hip-hop songs have the slang term right in the title of the track or album. Ill or sick meaning best or cream of the crop. Sorry if it offends your effete sense of language. I clarified to ensure it was seen as a compliment.

It is amazing that the Dutch made Marijuana illegal in Indonesia, with Indonesian drug laws being among the toughest. 4 years for personal use possession. Yet Holland today has the most relaxed drug laws in Europe, attracting many Marijuana Tourists. That is colonial logic for you. 1kg Marijuana = £4000 minimum. Maastricht alone makes £26,000,000 per annum from French hash tourists.

Can someone explain to me the precise difference between Balinese gamelan and Javanese gamelan? What about Sundanese? Or is it really a matter of different styles in different villages and at different times? I love gamelan and sometimes I try to really listen rather than just have it playing as background music (e.g. while I cook!). I learned a bit of Sundanese dance in Bandung in 1976-77. My academic articles about Indonesia are on my web pages.
