I've been exposed to it a bit through yoyoing since both are in the same genre of a skill toy. I think they're great if you can do the tricks, but as a tool, I'd rather carry any other knife. I'd rather not carry a karambit either. I know a friend of a friend who acts all badass with his, but everyone knows he's just an edge lord with it. I carry an OTF, but at least it's usable as a knife.

That's why it has a strange curve to it and is held in reverse grip. It allows the user to get a good pull going. For combat, Karambit all the way. Its difficult to disarm a Karambit with that ring loop. Also, the ring loop helps you grapple without dropping your blade. We cant play jitter spinners in a knife fight xD Practicality over flashiness.

Balisong is one of the most enjoyable things ever. Learning new tricks and all of that. Never learned to skate or anything really because my parents were too afraid of me hurting myself. The balisong is only good as a distraction or a offensive dagger in a fight it was primarily used in the Phillipines as a utility knife because the 2 handle construction proved to be very durable compared to one handle and pin where the blade could break and go backwards this design evolved and became better to flip as people flipped it more and eventually made a kind of pseudo martial arts with them karambits are fairly good in a fight but only for cutting you cant actually stab with one which is a masssssive drawback for a knife i still like balis better because the flipping is more satisfying for me Edit karambits are also used as utility knives for electricians because the hawk talon blade is really good at stripping wires (its also good at cutting rope)

We have some training karambits and usually new guys will always beg to use one for sparring. Always happy to accomidate, but they usually find out pretty quick they are horrible as a fighting weapon. Its the edgy kids knife. That being said ive bought a few and made a few and they sure are fun to flip around. Also they are exceedingly good at their intended purpose, as a gardening tool. I even use it in wood working every once in awhile. And i would say its probably better than nothing in a fight, but you lose the ability to thrust and the ring is more likely to break your finger in a fight.

Honestly a Balisong knife and a Karambit will never compare to how intimidating a sword is.
