Personally, as a Romanian and a bit of a bodybuilder (calisthenics/weightlifting), for breakfast I usually eat an onion (big one - sometimes half, other times two), a few thin slices of slănină (cold), cheese, few scoops of 20% or 30% cream w/ bread, ~1-2g (closer to 2g) of pork/beef/chicken per my bodyweight in kg, one/half a bowl of chopped lettuce, and half/one boiled potato with butter on top. The boiled potato can be replaced by potato salad, pasta, or bean soup. Recently I've added tuna, 2-4 times per month into the mix to up my omega 3 intake (it's also the only fish I've found that doesn't have a strong smell). That's probably my favorite meal these days and it's served me well in terms of muscle gains. Oh, and a scoop of honey and nougat creme at the end! Ofc, 3.5g of creatine and a multivitamin as well, but that's in my drink rather than in my food. Oh, sometimes I eat all of the above cold, straight from their individual pots from the fridge. It slightly helps with weight loss (because your body has to expend energy heating it up to process it first) and it's faster. Balkan Dad's meal also looks quite good to me and I've had something similar many times. He's entirely correct about how to eat it as well!

Apart from the raw onions and garlic, this is pretty much a traditional Turkish breakfast too. However, we almost never drink ayran at breakfast-milk is the more common choice. That said, since the 1920s, as tea started pruduced localy, we’ve developed a habit of consuming an arguably unhealthy amount of "çay" (black tea for you Westerners). Today, it’s the staple drink of our breakfasts.

They do sell Kefir drinkable yogurt in America, but it's a specialty health food so it's real expensive per bottle
@evlfck
@evlfck 11 күн бұрын
You can multiply it mate, same as with yogurt. Kefir is a basically a bacteria colony, related to the bacteria that makes yogurt. If you mix a bottle of kefir with some whole milk, it will turn the milk into kefir in like 2 days. You can do this constantly with yogurt and kefir. There are more detailed guides on the internet. Basically you only need to buy it once.

Nah, we totally have drinkable yogurt here in the states. It's become more common I'd say in the last 4-5 years (outside of "kid stuff" like Danimals and GoGurt). It's among my favorite things to grab on my way to/from work at the gas station. As for keffir and ayran....Ain't ever seen it. Hell, I had to search online to have something simple like garum (so worth it).

I find it interesting that most of the ingredients he used for his balkan breakfast, in my home/culture, we use and make it into a type of pancake like meal called torreja except everything is diced up and mixed together. I've seen like liquid yogurt at the market before but have never tried it, maybe ill give it a shot the next time I go shopping.

I've only been living in Bulgaria for a month, and I've already started eating like that automatically lol. The Ayran is great, there are fresh vegetable stalls everywhere, and the eggs and sausages are really good too, and you can always get fresh bread at the many bakers around. I actually feel like the quality of the food here is better than in Norway, especially if you go to the local shops rather than the big supermarkets.

The best part of the zacuscă is that each country doing it has a different preference when it comes to the ingredients going into it. Basically, you can taste the same dish from different country and have different experiences. For the Latin-Americans, zacuscă is similar to salsa, but it's meant to be preserved for months. It's one of the top student foods too.

Okay, one day we need to look into this phenomenon; why are eggs universally celebrated as a breakfast food in almost every country and culture? Like, the dish could be anything, but eggs somehow make their way in in some form or another. Also, would love to try a Balkans' breakfast.
@daniel4647
@daniel4647 11 күн бұрын
Probably because if you have chickens they'll usually lay eggs over night and you can just go out and pick an endless supply of high protein food that will get you ready for a day of hard manual labour. So it makes sense that most cultures would pick that up as a breakfast thing.

As an American I'd eat that breakfast I understand that other countries may not have some of the same foods that we have but they have things that are harder for us to get here it doesn't make our food better or worse I feel that people use what is more readily available to them depending on where they live and there's nothing wrong with that like you don't get to choose your parents you don't get to pick what country you're born in why can't we see human first nationality second
