Balkan love songs, Holiday Activities, Blue Hotel

On our Friday and Saturday program, Caty Weaver and Mario Ritter, Jr. host the show. Caty tells listeners what they are going to hear.
(:57) First, Anna Matteo has a story about an artistic tradition in southeastern Europe. Musicians in Sarajevo are trying to save a traditional form of Balkan love song that has existed for hundreds of years. The sad music combines Slavic poetry and the music of the Ottoman Empire. Now, the United Nations has recognized the important cultural tradition of this Balkan art form.

He explains the structures of common sentences involved in talking about the holidays. One example is: What did you do for Christmas? John’s advice extends to verb tense and subject matter.

We offer examples of how we might summon other people in everyday speech. You will also learn about how to use different structures in different situations. There are many stories about the period of American history when the western part of the country was called "the wild west." There are as many false stories about this period as there are true ones.
Stephen Crane was a famous writer in the late 1800s. “The Blue Hotel,” Part One, is a good example of Crane’s writing style. Crane tells the story of how a card game in the American West ends in tragedy, strangely foretold by the victim. The story is full of dramatic tension as it develops.
