Ball Joints & Tracer Tips, continue into Sunday to get them wrapped up for my short week. I must get a bit creative with the jig plate for the tracer ball shape but still maintain full control of adjustments and blend the second cut just right.
“Made in China” is a warning label….
Life is good! Cheers, Keith

"Man or his machine - which one is the slave?" Wow, hidden inside that raw material was a beautiful part. You just remove everything that's not it, and what's left is a masterpiece. Should hang those on a Christmas tree, Keith.

Great work Keith, the Wazer and hydraulic copy makes life so much easier and accurate. I had to machine a couple balls some years by fitting a chuck to arbour mount on milling machine using a rotary table it took ages.

I have never used a copy attachment, but remember the one they had on an old Lang lathe they had in the marine workshop in Birkenhead UK, when I was an apprentice nearly 50 years ago. They used to weld the piston crowns from big marine diesel engines, with about 20-25mm thick of heat resistant steel and then machine back to shape on the Lang. I think the largest piston crowns they did would have been around 900mm in dia. The bed was probably 30ft long and would have been able to take a ships tailshaft. A good size of lathe, but nothing the size Craven Brothers of Manchester turned out.

Fantastic work, Keith. I last touched a tracer on a Graziano in 1967 but the parts were way less complex. Am I correct in thinking that if you first did the shank, the shoulder and the flat up to where the taper starts and then flipped the part, it would be harder to find the Y distance without undercutting the back side of the ball?

Great would be if your brain could be downloaded into A.I.Your knowledge and skills should be preserved for all man kind before it is too late being the collapse is certain.C N C will not work but Manual machining will even if powered by a water wheel.1 E. M.P. and it is over for computers but the human brain still works if the knowledge and skills are saved.

Keith first off physically you are looking excellent. And the video and job was excellent also. I'm wondering just out of curiosity a one-off job like this if it was handed to an excellent manual machinist like yourself with a tracer doing everything alone start to finish no one else involved how would it compare to an excellent CNC machinist programmer doing the same one off part start to finish in time and quality of work? If there is an experienced programmer CNC operator reading this comment would you please chime in and give me your honest opinion on the time and and quality of work you think this one part would take. Not looking to bash either technology, just curious. Thank you.
