Ball Side Drive and Defensive Fundamentals: Game Break, Episode 3

In our 3rd episode of game break, where we take game footage and break it down, we learn about the ball side drive and how to defend it. The ball side drive is so fundamental to basic offense, ever player needs a good understanding of this drive and how to guard it. Thank you for your great effort. I had a question, how long have you been playing water polo?

I started playing the summer before my freshman year in high school because back then we didn't have youth programs like they do now. So that would be around 1990. I just did an 'Ask a Coach' episode with my first coach who taught me so much of the fundamentals that I teach here, Coach Craig. That will be out soon.

Q: is it the open space that makes this far to near drive possible? what would happen if the set was not allowed to get so deep?

If the defender denies ball side then it just makes it harder to enter the ball into set. The center offense has to work harder and longer for position or the offense might have to reverse the ball to the other side. In this example the defense just made it way too easy to get the ball in.
