RIP Toumani Diabete - Sona Jobarteh's uncle, both from 2 of the greatly revered griot Kora families from West Africa, carrying the tradition of this amazing music from father to son for 1420 years in Toumani's family .
@ElSasser20074 ай бұрын
Doubtful, as the Kora was developed in the 16th Century, with possible precursors in the 14th.
@bobanbu4 ай бұрын
@@ElSasser2007 thanks - somewhere I read they have carried the tradition 71 generations, so we figured 20 years a gen? guess that was wrong . How long was it?
@ElSasser20074 ай бұрын
@@bobanbu No idea. The MUSICAL tradition COULD be that old… But specific instruments emerged at different times in history. Griot is a French word from Portuguese, originally meaning servant; in African languages jeli or jali is the word for a griot, and his art is known as jeliya. Jeli (and the precursors of the kora) emerge from Mali and were widespread in the Mail Empire in the 14th Century. Timbuktu of course is in Mali and is famous for its very ancient library. That area was long a centre of culture, and I should think a tradition of music and poetry could be very ancient indeed: compare the Homeric tradition in Greece and the Runic Singers of Finland, the Germanic Skalds, etc… No doubt in African cultures too the hereditary passing on of poetry and song is very ancient indeed, and just as the lyre and the harp developed in some traditions, so the kora and its precursors developed in Africa.

Mandinka and Djeli. the Proper name for the Mandinka people is Mandinka, the proper title for the Dogon keeper of Dogon history is Djeli. Mandingo is the European bastardization of the name Mandinka, and Griot is the French term for Djeli. Something is always lost in translation, and that is why the original should always be used.
