I like it that the kitchen is somewhat separated from the family room. Too many new homes have the open floor plan, which I don't like seeing

You're right, open plans from the kitchen and family room are pretty common now but there are some exceptions. Are you looking for a new home in the Columbia, SC area?

How common are basements in Columbia? How much would it cost to finish one?

Not too common. Maybe about 2% of homes. More likely to find them new or newer homes. They are primarily walkout basements like you see here. The front part of the basement is subterranean and the back you can walkout into the backyard. Typically price on an unfinished basement is $35K to $50 depending on floorplan size. People don't seem to get the builder to finish out the basement and actually many builders don't even offer an option to finish it out. It could cost anywhere from $20K on up to fully finish out a basement and depending on finishes.

Possibly~ we are military and trying to decide on a final retirement home in the next year. After living up north for 4 years we've come to realize how awesome basements are for all of the "stuff" that comes with kids. :) I have your website bookmarked and LOVE all of the videos you've provided!
