The way they passed the ball is what made them so hard to beat. I've never seen a high school team get the ball up the court as fast as them. It opens the floor up and the defense cannot keep up.

But that formula only works if you also play "D" (which Chino Hills obviously did)!

To this day it still amazes me that a team that only played 5-6 players by-and-large managed to destroy some of the top teams nation wide from a previously unnoteworthy public school program. For example, Mater Dei is a national powerhouse with the winningest coach in the history of California basketball. This team in particular had I think 13 DI commits on it and 5 guys dog walked them. What's even more incredible is how simple of a style they played. I read up on it and their main offense was a transition game(as we all know)that utilized Lonzo's court vision to hit the three runners. If that wouldn't work, he attacked off the dribble, looking to LiAngelo mid-post as a last resort. If they were ever forced to the halfcourt game, they had 3 options: 1. Screen and roll with Okongwu and Lonzo 2. Iso for Lonzo 3. Hit LiAngelo mid-post. Their baseline inbound play was to look for direct entries 90% of the time. If that failed, Okongwu set a cross screen for LiAngelo. The last resort was a quick inbound with Lonzo posting his man up on the block immediately after the inbound, Their basic defense was a 2-3 Zone with an active zone press that was used whether they made shots or not. The site I read this on described their defense as "waiting to play offense" Their system wasn't flashy or complex, the strength was in the overwhelming individual talent of each member.

Lamelo was really so confident at 14 🤩
@colintrostle7934 Жыл бұрын
I'll still never be able to wrap my head around the fact that this was a PUBLIC SCHOOL that had no means to recruit their players, unlike a bunch of the other schools (of whom they went 35-0 against) did. 3 top 10 NBA picks from this district all playing together by chance is just ridiculous. Let's also not forget that LaMelo was supposed to be in 8th grade this year and moved up a grade to play with both of his brothers for one season. And the fact that these dudes are literally running and gunning for the entire game, routinely making passes that you usually only see in video games, and only subbing guys out if they were absolutely destroying the other teams. High school basketball lore just doesn't get much better than this. We'll likely never see a team like this again but I'm thankful we're able to still watch videos like this of them.

Chino was disrespectful. They was bulling teams. The Ball brothers together was assassination but they whole squad was deadly. Gelo shot was wet. The look on the coaches face for Mater Dei is priceless. Like he really can’t believe what he is witnessing. Not only are you getting spanked but you getting clowned on too. Just think of what the score and the game would’ve looked like if they had been 100% dialed in not making careless mistake and turn overs.

Full court press, trapping the ball and running the fast break 24/7....this team was a nightmare. The fact that a public school destroyed all the top private schools makes them the BEST high school team ever. Some people think their offense is cheap or they're cherry picking...if it was that easy then every team would do it, but they can't and they don't. You need crazy stamina to play this style. It's a mix of the showtine Lakers and Nash, Amare, Marion, Joe Johnson Suns.

Now that im watching them again, i see why they was blowing teams out. Came out with a quick 2 3s and a 1 2 2 trap defense. Thats constant pressure add in the point differerential slowly getting larger. Now the other team trying to play faster than they are accustomed to which only leads to more turnovers amd frustration. If thats what you expect from a great player, then sure, lonzo is amazing, he is shoting 56% FT, much better than most primary school kids. To be fair, lonzo has great zrt vision amd decent defender. By the emd of hs career, he will be remembered as a washed down version of patrick beverly. And Lamalo will be the same as lonzo, but sligtly better at scoring.
