This is, like, the greatest day ever. Who are you, you magical person, you? You have just made my day. I had this on VHS too, in ballet school. I thought I'd never see these great documentaries again. Most of these are only available at the NY Public Library! Can you imagine being coached by Makarova? I could listen to her all day... the way her voice is like caramel, and her eyes flash and sparkle when she's explaining something.

i was so happy to get this footage and couldn't not share - everyone should have access to it. glad you like it!!! i think Makarova would be a most incisive in tune teacher - would be great to have worked with her. such a definite personality - she knows what she is about :)

Man, Makarova is BRUTAL! She was merciless with that fledgling Odette. Of course, she has every right to be. Makarova herself set the impossibly high standard that she was demanding of the ballerina she was coaching.

yes, makarova just wants it right, no excuses. YT removed Part 1 - i put it on Vimeo: vimeo.com/194211649

I saw this documentary a long time ago on A&E on TV. It is wonderful to see it again, it is a wonderful documentary and Miss Makarova is "perfect" as Tudor says, she is a true ballerina. Thank you.

it's a great doco - YT removed Part 1 - i put it on Vimeo: vimeo.com/194211649 in this upload, Tudor says the ballerina must be perfect - Makarova says that no-one is perfect - Tudor disagrees - Makarova knowing she (and all other ballerinas) are not perfect feels i think he does not consider her a ballerina on these grounds. kzbin.info/www/bejne/fXTbkJJ8aclofMU

Thank you for sharing this documentary on youtube, i think it shows just how much ballet movement and shape of Ballerina has changed these past few years.

I haven't seen this in a long time. That heartbreaking Cranko R&J is just incredible. I wish more companies would perform that version... there's nothing like it.

Heels down vs walking on the pleats of the pointe shoes is an interesting choice. We have all watched many Odettes I'm sure. Most if the Russian dancers I've seen (just in KZbin) keep the heels up both for the walks and the pique entournant en dedans in the final phrases. The acting she is demanding is also more detailed than most I have seen lately.

Please may I ask what language the subtitles are in? Danish?
@JohnRaymondHall8 жыл бұрын
hello Louise - the subtitles are Swedish (i'm pretty sure but not certain!)

Were you living in Sweden when you taped it? It didn't matter too much except when Maya Plisetskaya was talking in Russian. The English subtitles were under the Swedish ones.
@JohnRaymondHall8 жыл бұрын
no i've only had a very brief visit to Sweden - by boat from Denmark. yes the multiple subtitles get in the way a bit

Is it... is it physically possible for anyone there is, or has ever been... to be on the same par with one Natalia Makarova? I've seen some real swans, some that must have been born angels--perhaps even never mortal for a day... But not a single one of them can be placed on a similar mantel as Makarova. Even those than came out of Russia... Well that is, until I saw Svetlana Zakhaova.
