As an older 40’s equestrian who does show jumping competitions and have been laid up for several months now with a torn meniscus in one knee and moderate arthritis in both (just had my first fluid drain/intra articular cortisone injection in the knee with the torn meniscus about 4 days ago), I feel this too! We actually don’t really “sit there” on our horses. We rely quite heavily on our ankles and knees to be shock absorbers while we are posting the trot (when you rise out of the saddle every other trot step), while we are riding the canter in a half seat (our bums just barely out of the saddle, with our weight in our ankles and knees) and DEFINITELY landing off of jumps! You have to keep your upper body tall to stay out of the horses way, and absorb the impact of a 1,200-1,500 lb animal hitting the ground only in your legs and hips, not sitting back down in the saddle until the horse’s hind feet have also landed. The taller the jump, the more concussion taken by your joints. I’ve actually come home from competitions with bruised knees and thighs quite often. Unfortunately, when you do this repetitively for 35+ years, and you are getting older, the cartilage in your joints erodes…. Being diagnosed with the torn meniscus and moderate arthritic degeneration in both knees made me feel VERY old all of a sudden! 😥 Time for physical therapy now, and hopefully a shot of hyaluronic acid in the bad knee in a few more weeks will have me riding comfortably again (without sobbing in pain with ice packs on my knees for hours after riding!)
