Discussing picking a bullet and what really matters when it comes to a quick clean kill. What factors are actually involved and correcting bad information. Showing real results with ballistics gel and hunting shots. Why meat damage isn't a bad thing, exit holes aren't required and weight retention doesn't equal good performance.

Been really enjoying your content! A agree with your reasoning on needing a pass-through. If the animal is bleeding it is bleeding, whether it gets out or not.

Ok 18min of talking. I fast forwarded. When you do get to the gel tests, which bullets are at what time stamps? Great examples, exactly what I want to see. But I don’t know which rounds are shown when.

Still not sure why people think pass through on larger animals are a must. Mostly the same people that refuse to kill coyotes with a load that exits! I want bullets to dump 100% of what they got right inside the cavity

Part comes from archery where you want two holes for blood loss and tracking. Even with archery though you don’t need a pass through. The other main source is guys using bad bullets and getting terrible performance requiring long track jobs. Instead of going with a better bullet they think what they’re using is amazing. It really makes zero sense to me as I want the best terminal performance possible and the animal to drop right away.

Great info! Always disagreed with needing an exit wound with a rifle, if your bullet dumps the energy like it should the animal isn’t going anywhere, no tracking required. Which bullets do I recommend as your top hunting picks?? Including match bullets, how are the Berger match bullets?
@longrangehuntinggroup7223

Hornady amax, eld match, and a tips. All Bergers except for the vld line. The sierra tipped match kings. Those are the best performers right now for terminal ballistics. I just killed a bull elk with a 110 a tip out of my 6mm creedmoor at 494 yards. Bergers are great bullets for external and terminal ballistics. All Bergers except for the vld line are the hybrid design. They have different names but terminal performance is the same.

@@longrangehuntinggroup7223 so all bergers target or otherwise are good terminal performers?? I would use the vld line because I hear they are hard to tune and I’m not very experienced with handloading
@longrangehuntinggroup7223
@longrangehuntinggroup7223 Жыл бұрын
@@mikebodnarchuk2056 the vld line isn’t great and has issues and failures. All other Bergers are the new hybrid design. They have a massive cavity inside the nose of the bullet. This prevents the issue vld and other bullets have of clogging. Bullets the small hollow point can clog with hide etc and it effectively becomes a fmj. Now some companies have enlarged the hole or people do it themselves. This has a negative effect on the BC. With Berger having the larger cavity. Even if the hole clogs it will still expand. Upon impact the nose collapses forcing expansion. So you keep the high bc and get reliable massive expansion. What people call difficult to load for or get to shoot. It’s generally because they don’t have the patience. They want the first load to work perfect and that doesn’t happen much. Sometimes it is simply the need to play with seating depths but they don’t want to do it. Or another common one is they pick a bullet that their twist rate won’t stabilize. I’ll tell you what when you go to start reloading let me know and we can go off of here in email or something and get you squared away. To start off before you get bullets Berger has a amazing stability calculator. It works for any bullet just punch in the information and it will tell you if it’s stable in that twist rate with that velocity. Here’s a link for it. bergerbullets.com/twist-rate-calculator/ Longrangehuntinggroup@yahoo.com is my email if you choose to reach out separately. Happy hunting

So I reached out and got feedback from a dozen people. Positive reports from the 300 blackout but it’s only good for a couple hundred yards with that bullet for reliable expansion.

Really the videos on animals where all basically spined not sure how that applies to proof of bullet construction and performance on game?
@longrangehuntinggroup7223

A high shoulder shot is going for the shoulder blades. Behind them the spine dips down prior to connecting with the neck. In that section is the brachial plexus. That’s a bundle of nerves that sends messages to the body from the brain stem. There’s a big difference between a spinal shot and hitting/shutting down the cns with a brachial plexus shot. A spine hit further back will simply paralyze it generally the head and neck are still able to move. A bad bullet can not cause a cns shot even hitting the shoulder. You have to cause sufficient trauma to destroy the brachial plexus. If you miss it going too high it will simply break bones and not shut down the cns. A good bullet even missing will create a large enough energy transfer to destroy and shutdown the brachial plexus killing it before it hits the ground. Even with cns shots how effective the bullet is makes a difference.

I have had good luck with both.... Basic cheap old Remington corelokt 3006 150 gr left a fist sized hole in a buck a few years back. I have also used 168gr federal gold medal match. 308 with great results. Match bullets will tumble and fragment (depending on velo and range) imparting huge energy inside the animal. If I had to choose a basic jsp is fine. I have taken deer with my AR with neck and head shots.... It's all about practice and putting those projectiles exactly where you want them.
@longrangehuntinggroup7223
@longrangehuntinggroup7223 3 жыл бұрын
You're not actually correct on that match bullets don't really tumble with the exception of the SMK and even that I've never seen in person and I've shot probably 20,000 rounds of SMK. It can happen with them on rare occasions when the hollow point fills up making it effectively a fmj. It's called necking over where it will cause displacement and then start to turn while pushing forward and changing its direction. This potential issue is a easy fix by taking a 1/16" drill bit and opening up the tip. It's only a issue with hollow points. Ballistics tips like eld match, a tips, Sierra TMK's, etc it's not going to happen. As far as them fragmenting that's not a bad thing. Any bullet with enough impact resistance and impact velocity will fragment. There's self defense rounds designed specifically to fragment because of the terminal damage caused. Match bullets fragmenting is only at high velocity impacts. It doesn't just crumble or anything like that. It rapidly expands and as it expands pieces come off and go forward causing their own wound channels. I do agree practice is key and your abilities to place it where you want to go is key.
