Nah, what Mercelino said wasn't that bad. I get people want to protect players well-being and see dribblers express themselves freely on the pitch but that's just from an attacking perspective. From a defending perspective, it's dangerous and degrading to let attackers play how ever they want. Off the ball, their job is to stop that kind of thing from happening by all means even at the cost of the players leg. And a lot times, defenders had to take bookings and suspensions not for themselves but for the team because there's always a better chance to defend a spot kick than a team that has broken through the defensive lines. And also it's safer to go harder on outstanding players like Yamal who's a threat to their defense than giving him space and time to do whatever he wants. I mean back in the day, Madrid players used take turns in knocking down Barca players and receiving tactical fouls and yellow cards, just to either stop or slow down their world class players like Messi,Neymar, Iniesta and Alves from having time on the ball to influence the game. And that was peak El Classico, the most entertaining times of my life in football. The only problem I see with Villarreal is that they were losing and those tackles were unnecessary. If they were protecting a lead or playing out a draw, I see no reason why this type of defensive mentality is bad for football. The attacking just have to become more creative with how they approach the games
