Balloon with GoPro to Near Space

High altitude unmanned balloon launch that goes up to near space and back.
HOW I GOT THE FOOTAGE BACK:
I used a SPOT GPS tracker in the payload to track where the payload fell after the balloon burst. Then I retrieved it with the GoPro and its recorded footage inside. See links below for much more details.
Yes, it’s a GoPro, yes they have a built in semi fish eye lens. Think what you want, I did this for my own enjoyment, not to prove any point.

All designed and launched by myself. All FAA regulations were followed, the FSDO was notified and given all the details, and a NOTAM was even filed with Ft Worth center for balloon activity.
A lot of people asked me why I was doing this. Mostly, I had free time and needed a project/hobby to keep me engaged and secondly, space is neat. Check out the video and see for yourself.

I've not tried the experiment myself, but it's doable. If you can find a high rise building with a fast enough lift you can do this, too. Fisheye lenses do not distort the center of the frame (Look up barrel distotion). So when the horizon is at the center we see the real shape.

As I watched this, I thought of people in the past. They never got to see this. How would they have reacted to seeing this? And because I watched a reimagination of the Pompeii disaster right before this video, I thought of them seeing this and how they would've felt (off tangent but the Pompeii natives probably thought the gods were angry at them🙁). Technology is amazing! And the last shot, with you standing in front of the camera, against the backdrop of pink-blue clouds, I thought of children in centuries past, and the fact that they never got to see this, just as I'd never get to see things that happen after my death, even though they lived under the same sky as you do

When I was a child going to public school in the 1960's, there were books about "Space" in our school libraries. Some from the 1940's. Many from the 1950's. And "Space" was defined as the lowest altitude where a simply oxygen mask wasn't enough. Where you needed either a SEALED CABIN or a full SPACE SUIT just to survive. And, back then, the experts all agreed; that altitude was 50,000 feet and higher!

Interesting. I just looked it up, the Karman line as a definition for intruduced later in the 1950s, the idea was to set and end for "aviation". And at the Karman line (100 km = 328,000 feet) the neccessary speed to get aerodynamic uplift becomes as high as orbital speed. At the end it is all arbitrary.

the further you go up, the more pressure you feel, and toy ballons arent that good in surviving high pressures, also i think it has to do with wind sometimes

the baloons are unpressurized obviously and the difference in pressure makes the baloon pop (because the inside is getting too swallowed up) this is similar to what happens to your ears but your ears can withstand so they dont pop
