The statue is in memory of Dan O' Mahoney who was world wrestling champion in the days when it was for real, without the tomfoolery. He was a local who died in a car crash and is buried in Schull cemetery.

The town is on the main road to the Mizen peninsula, no bypass and little public transport, hence the traffic. It's an historic place, read the sign to the right of the one concerning the Titanic. A huge protest meeting was held in the town, much against the wishes of the authorities. The boxer was nicknamed the Irish Whip hence the name of the pub. Ballydehob is famous for music festivals and several are held each year. The Chesnut Tree restaurant has a Michelin star, not bad for such a small town. Plenty of good walks and good music in the pubs, It used to have a hippy type image and that is still obvious.

Gaelivanter T’was forty years ago now, since I left the land of ire. Both hemispheres all of the continents twenty houses bought and sold, eternally moving, a transient drifter a vagabond and itinerant and sure tis here I am back again like a tinker in a van with me antipodean woman parked up in Bally de Hobo.
