The Dudoks' main focus for the '20-'21 season is the music by Johannes Brahms. Brahms, both beloved and despised for his elaborated and complex music, had one great fondness: easily understandable popular melodies. According to him, these should always be the supreme goal of any form of music. We have been following his example by making arrangements of both indigenous Hungarian folk music as well as music from Roma popular culture.
In this video we perform an arrangement of Santa Ördög, a tune originally written and performed by Balogh Kálmán & the Gipsy Cimbalom Band. Listen to the original here: • Balogh Kálmán és a Gip... . We first performed this piece years before establishing the quartet, as members of the Ricciotti Ensemble. The title (meaning ‘lame devil’) hints at the asymmetrical 7/8-time bar that creates a skewed kind of dance. Though this type of meter is quite common in both Hungarian and Roma music, to Brahms' ears it must have sounded quite exotic!
