The Baltimore & Ohio Railroad Museum for their annual Railfest Steamdays. This year's event was quite different from the past, with the Lafayette operating for the first time in years. The event has been expanded to encompass the entire month of October instead of just one weekend. October 5th was the only day where all three events, Civil War Weekend, Steamin' Saturdays, and October Steam Month all overlapped.
The engine powering the regular excursions was 0-4-0 #4, the St. Elizabeth. St. Elizabeth was built in 1950 by the H.K. Porter Company, she was the last engine built by the H.K. Porter Company.
The Lafayette is actually a replica, built in 1927 by the Baltimore & Ohio for the 1927 Festival of the Iron Horse. This engine was built in the Mount Clair Shops, which is where she was running during Railfest 2013. The Lafayette is a 4-2-0 Norris Type Steam engine. Sit back, and enjoy the sights and sounds of steam on the B&O, don't forget to comment, rate, and subscribe for plenty of great railroad action!

Yeah, the Lafayette was used to play the _Yonah_ while the _William Mason_ was the star as _The General_ herself. They also brought in _Inyo_ from the Nevada Railway museum to play the _Texas._

Every few years the museum will also pull the Lafayette out for "variety." Fortunately, their streak of bad luck with that engine was broken this year...for the first time in a LONG time, it didn't POUR nonstop all weekend the Lafayette was hot.

The Tom Thumb Replica is also maintained in operating condition at the B&O Museum. It last ran for the public in 2009 or 2010. The Lafayette and Mason are far preferred for "demonstration" purposes.

It would be grand to see the Lafayette pull an excursion to Ellicott's Mills along the Old Main...
@everettmeehling
@everettmeehling 8 жыл бұрын
+Fran McMullen It would certainly be an interesting sight. Although I can't image any scenario where it happens, as getting the trackage rights for such an event would be next to impossible, then factor in the fact that Lafayette can't legally pull any cars because it lacks air brakes. But, despite the impracticality, it is something that if it were possible, I'd like to see happen.

+Everett Meehling - Indeed... but Railfans are good pipe-dreams, if nothing else ! ;) I grew-up in Ilchester, just up the hill from the tunnel and former Patterson Viaduct, and both grandfathers worked for the B&O at Mt. Clare Shops, Leo McMullen in the Erecting shops from 1914-1950, and Herb Shifflett in the Blacksmith shops from 1936-1969 (when they closed the Mt. Clare facility).

They used to run excursions to Ellicott City back in the Chessie Days. They were entitled "Along the Scenic B&O" trips. They used diesels and Budd cars, but it was still cool to ride the Old Main Line.

I learned about the Lafayette from the Allegheny portage railroad. The house i grew up is from that and the railroad went up infront of the house about 30 feet from where the rails where. would be awesome to see this back in its hay days.

The Lafayette is maintained so that when ever the William Mason is down for a 1472/FRA Form 4 they can still have a locomotive doing run-bys by the Mount Clair Shops. ( a 1472/FRA Form 4 is an FRA regulated overhaul which must be done on all FRA regulated steam engines every 1472 service days or once every 15 years, which ever comes first) The Lafayette, William Mason, and St. Elizabeth #4 are the only operational steam engines at the B&O.

Oh I didn't know that either, I understand. It's just that before they were withdrawn for their boiler expirations, I never knew they use to run once every "steam day" year. I always have seen the William Mason running, but never knew Lafayette also once ran before it's boiler certificate expired.

@@DynamoProductions-trains Correction, their boiler times didn't expire, problems were found that were too expensive to fix. As of right now, both the Lafayette and the Porter are awaiting for restoration from their 1472 inspection, William Mason is sadly gonna remain on display until someone finds money to get her running again

Unfortunately , you're not gonna like this at all, today, all the B&O's steam locomotives are inoperable. William Mason is now officially on static display due to a problem found in her that was too expensive to fix as it exceeded the museum's budget, damn money problems! A similar case happened with Lafayette and Porter 4, as of right now, only B&O's diesel fleet remains active and haul most of their trains now which sucks because diesels are nothing but grim and boring compared to the magnificent steam locomotives. I'm not giving up hope here though, Lafeyette and the Porter are currently awaiting restoration as of 2019 and this year from their 1472 inspections, as for old William Mason, only time will tell when someone has enough money to fix her up to operation again

@DynamoProductions-trains

William Mason would need a new firebox, an expense of about 250k. As the Mason only runs one weekend a year, it was deemed to be not worth the expense. The B&O Museum will be working to fund Lafayette and #4 for rebuild, which fundraising is still ongoing.
